didn't this be enomrh for her?
Why should her thoughts go harking
back to one man, out of all the world,
who bad flouted her?
Frank drove on the homeward drive
and the three Insisted that she sit
beside him in the front seat. Hilda
wns heavily tactful about this: Kaih
erine didn't mind. They were nice peo
ple nnd they liked her and showed It.
She glowed in the atmosphere of ad
miration and easy laughter. Frank
didiVt talk much he wasn't given to
idle chatter but every now and then
he rave her an eloquent look.
lie had to give most of his atten
tion to the driving, however. There
were traitorous dips in this canon road.
Sometimes a sheer drop appeared on
their left without an instant warn
ing. But Frank had a svre hand on
the wheel, Katharine wasn't afraid.
They took the journey in leisurely
fashion. It was the way, Hilda ex
plained, they liked to travel. That
night they camped on the edge of the
desert under tho stars. Frank had his
guitar with him he'd been in a college
orchestra and he played "Parlez mol
d'nmour" with a good deal of feeling.
The starB and the music and the camp
fire nil made rn unforgettable- scene.
Life would be so simple, Knthnrlne
argued with herself, if one coidd fid
low the line of least resistance. She
mijrht, for example, marry Frcnk Mil
lard nnd bear him fine children and
love him quite uncritically and make
a sort of picnic of existence. But she
had muddled up her life before she
met him. She liked him a lot he wns
as likable as a big Newfoundland or
a friendly child. But love? Well, Bho 1
h:;d known that once; It hadn't been
exnclly pleasant. It had been all dizzy
heights and nwful depths. She would j
try to steer clear of it in the future.
AH of this she thought ns Frank
strummed the plaintive mus'c and the
smoke of IKrk's nnd Ilild.i's cigarets i
c.irled toward tho red glow of the
campfire. Evelyn Vincent was asleep, I
propped rnther uncomfortably against !
the sc t. cushions of the cnr. Presently j
they all untied their bedding rolls and j
said yawning good nights. The women
had the tent. Di:-k nnd 1 rank arrang-
ed their beds by the fire.
Katharine did not elrt-p for a long
time. A mood of wakefulness was upon j
her. and, for the life of her. sleep j
would not come. She could see one
great, unwinking Wr.e star through the
tent flnp. Miss incent snored, and
Hilda stirred uneasily in br sleep. I
The music ecroed in Katharine s
bi n in. I
"Speak - to - me - of - love..."
After a long time her eyes closed
and she breathed easily and quietly.
There were tenrs on her cheeks.
No one was movini: about when she
awoke. Dressin: hastily, miming her
ivory comb through her flyaway curls,
she ghiiiced out to see that Flunk and
his brother lay in the relaxed and
rr.ther touching abandon cf persons
deeply asleep.
Restless. Katharine strolled about.
She needed exercise. tdu tuld horse'"
Before the snn came up she would
have a brief walk. Jnst ns f'nt
mesquitc bush In the middle dis
tance. . .
She walked along, absorbed in her
thoughts. Tomorrow she would be
back nt Sil?ncia; the pleasant, easy
life would begin again, with sun
drenched days filkd with sketching
nnd music and hrirho. imi-I (' hro'
in the library of the adobe house It
was not a bad life, but for a young,
restless, enger girl it was not every
thing. She glanced over her rhoulder. Per
haps she had Iwtter be turninc back.
Someone would waken nnd miss her,
pei haps be alarmed. But when she,
looked in the direction from which she j
had come she could 'see nothing of
the car or tho peaked tent or thr
sleeping men. Her heart heating a
little faster, she whirled. Incrensimr

boots, squeaked in the sand, slinpin:
