Friday afternoon the University of
Oregon library staff entertained with
a reception honoring Miss Monica
Shannon of Los Angeles, writer of
children's books and winner of the
John Newbery prize for best child's
book of 1934, who is visiting on the
campus nnd who epoke to the guests
Preceding the tea. She described her
life in the Sierra Nevada mountains
in California and read excerpts from
some of her work. In the receiving

van of prominent Portland club wom
en headed by Saidie Orr Dunbar, first
vice-president of the General Feder
ation of Women's ,clul-s who was
elected to that high post at the gen
eral convention in June at Detroit.
At the reception. Mrs. Dunbar will
speak on "Todny's Trends in Club
Work and the I'lace the Oregon Club
Woman Holds." Mrs. Dunbnr, who is
well known to-club women throughout
the county, will also give on account
of the general convention telling of
the recent developments which will
be of great interest here.
A special invitation has been ex
tended to presidents and officers of
all Lane county clubs, but all inter
ested women are invited by the com
mittee to hear Mrs. Dunbar.
Among Portland women coming will
be members .of tlio "Flying Squad
ron, a group of prominent Portland
women who are working on a sub
scription campaign for The Oregon

Girl Scout Camp
Sunday, opening the second week of
camp at Cleawox found 45 girls en
rolled. The first of the week wa
spent in reorganizing units and
classes. Patrol leaders in each unit
were elected and duties assigned.
Patrol leaders for the week are Jean
Chase and Virginia Hammond from
the Tekene group. Joyce Clark,
Florence Jackson and Peggy Wright
of the Gntnsi camp with Molly Chase
and Jean Kilpntrick from the Chicka
gamies. Tuesday, camp was visited by Mrs.
Wendell Van Loan. Girl Scout com
missioner, and Mrs. P. J. llanne who
spent the day ns regular girl scouts,
following the program with the en
tire camp. In the evening a general
camp fire was held. New songs were
introduced and learned under the di
rection of Margaret fteid, who is nleo
visiting the camp for a short time,
This week Instead of each grodp
going on individual over night tripe,
all the girls wishing to take the trip
are signing up, and though the trip
is scheduled for Uhursdny evening,
much enthusiasm has been shown
from the first of the week. Bear lake
has been chosen as the destination.

The couple will reside In Eugene
until September when they will leave
for Kirksville," Missouri, to make
their home. Mrs. Rathbone is a stu
dent at the osteopathic college here
and Mr. Rathbone is a graduate of the

The annual picnic of Phi Mu active
nnd alumnae member is being held
Monday evening at Willamette pnrk.
Around forty-five members are In the
city during the summer. Transporta
tion will le furnished thoiso who de
sire It and everyone will meet nt the
chapter house at six-fifteen Monday
evening. Ice ten, lemonade and ice
cream will be furnished and members
will bring their own Picnic lunches,
dishes and silver. On the committee
making arrangements for this picnic
are Mrs, Scott Williams, Miss Bertha
DeVaney, Miss Mnry Margaret Lott
and Miss Pearl Murphy.
