which took place in Vancouver, Wash.,
Inst Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. Whalley
have visited relntives and friends at
Everett, Wash., and will return to
Springfield next Wednesday, where
they will make their home.

40 ATTEND PICNIC
SPRINGFIELD, June 21. (Spe
cial) Over 40 Priscilla club mem
bers, families, and friends attended
the annuol picnic held Thursday at
Seavey's park. The group met at the
homo of Mrs. Frank Logan at 11
a. m., and went together to the park.
This was the last event of the
season for the club. Meetings will
be resumed in the fall.

SPRINGFIELD, June 21. (Spe
cial) Wm. E. Parrish of Eugene
wns the chief speaker at the meeting
of the Springfield Townsend club
Thursday evening at Taylor's hall.
At the session, 10 members volun
teered to work on the Springfield
playground project at Brattain field
Saturday. The playground will be
finished at that time and made all
ready for the opening on June 24.
Xliisicnl numbers were given by
the Harris sisters and by a group
of the members. The neit meeting
will be held July 5tb.

Gilbert Sprague, director of play
grounds for the city, announced that
the playgrounds and swimming pool
will open Monday, June 24. A more
extensive and complete program la be
ing offered this year than it has been
possible to present in the last few
years. y
Four playgrounds and the swimming
pool are to be open and actively sup
ervised. They will be locnted at Liu-
coln, Frances Willaird. ami Condon
schools; tne fourth will be in River
view Park in connection with the
swimming pool behind Skinners Butte.
These playgrounds will be open from
1 p. m. until dark every day except
Saturday when they will be open from
10 a. m. until 6 p. m.
Beside the regular Playground hand
icraft classes special wood carving
clashes will be conducted. The junior
hip'h schools, one on the east side and
the other on the west side of the city,
will probably be used as centers for
these wood carving classes.
Additional activities will Include
classes in first aid, field trips, nature
hike, music and dramatic groups.
A feature which will be especially
appreciated by biwy mother is the
children's nursery which will be main
tained. Mothers will be able to bring
their children to the nursery and leave
them for a few hours under the care
of an attendant.
The dates, details, and hours con
cerning the nursery and the special
activity classes will be announced
later.

cial) A bonfire at the gravel pile on
Mill street was extinguished by the
local fire department Thursday eve
ning when nenrby residents feared
that sparks shooting from the blaze
endangered their property. The fire
was started by a group of young
people.

Roseburg Man Must
Face Hit-and-Run
Charge in Courts
Walter Day of Roseburg was book
ed to appenr in the Eugene justice
court some time Friday afternoon on
a charge of failing to stop his car
and reporting an accident on the
highway.
Day was arrested between 5:30 and
6 o'clock Thursday evening after his
car, traveling south, struck a car
driven by Clyde Mathers of Goshen
on the overhead crossing between
West Springfield and Goshen. The
car Mathers was driving for delivery
after a repair job in Mather's shop,
was badly wrecked and Mathers' back
was injured,
Mathers Hugged a car and after re
turning to Goshen set out in com
puny with Kenneth Hayes to overtake
Day who had started up the Willam
ette highway with his crippled car. He
was overtaken and brought back to
Goshen. The state police were noti
fied and Day was brought to the
county jail.
