company has installed n first teletype
for business in this city. This machine
has a keyboard resembling that of a
typewriter and is operated by persons
at each end of the line who carry on
conversations by usirik the keyboard as
a sending and receiving machine.
The teletype facilities transmission
of telegrams. A valuable feature is
that a record is made of the conver
sation, preventing any chance for dis
pute or misunderstanding as to what
the conversation was. With this ma
chine the Dougherty Lumber com
pany will be able to get immediate
connection with any of its customers
that also have teletypes and to get
an answer delivered to its office as
rapidly as put on the wire at the
other end.
Connections are made direct with
Portland and direct from there to
other teletype stations. Two lines to
Portland had to be cleared before in-j
stallation could bo mnde. Service will ;
commence Monday.

On women's day at the Cottage
Grove golf course, Wednesday, Mrs.
Cynthia Barton won the kickers' tour
nament nfter having been tied with
Mrs. Ralph Snltsmnn. Mrs. Klmer
Neet and Mrs. Clco Morelock tied for
second place. Mrs. Wnlter Crabb bad
low gross. The women have started a
ladder, each member having three
days in which to challenge the player
on the rung above.
Alvin Moore, fireman for the Elmer
Mitchell mill east of Snginaw, suffer
ed injuries to his right foot and leg
Thursdny morning when he stepped
on n dynamite cap lying on the boiler
room floor. The pressure of Mr.
Moore's foot cniised the cap to ex
plode throwing him against the water
tank. The sudden shock wrenched th?
muscles of his foot and leg. Dr. B. H.
Job gave bim medical attention.

Although Mrs. Lora Finnerty has
been a resident of Cottage Grove 45 !
years and passed her 70lh anniversary !
in February, she maintains that no one i
is older than he feels, and she doesn't
feel old yet, as she proceeded to dem
onstrate when she was asked jokingly
a few days ago whether she would like :
to take a bicycle ride. She accepted ;
with alacrity, donned a bat and seated j
herself on the handlebar, preferring
to let someone else handle the pedals.
This was her first ride of the kind j
but she is in favor of more of them. '
At least one hen In the Cottage
Grove country has struck upon the
idea of producing eggs of such shape
that it will be apparent what they
are for. Her production is in the form
of a newly-born chicken. Evidently all
lime on hand was used and the "chick1
is almost a small statue. The hen is
owned by James Bedford, who intends
to encournge her in developing her
idea.
The Corvallis American Legion post
and auxiliary will be hosts to the Wil
lamette council at Benton-Lane park
Sunday. Special entertainment will be
provided for the children. Guests are
asked to bring their basket dinners
and Ice cream and coffee will be fur
nished.
Mr. and Mrs. N. E. Compton and
a daughter, Mrs, William Ashworth
left Wednesday to spnd several days
at the coast,
James Vnsbinder and a nephew, El
mer Vasbinder of Aberdeen, Wash.,
left Thursday for Bedwood City, Cal
ifornia, via the Oregon Caves. They
will return by the coastal route.
The BInck Butte mines have been
closed due to a shortage of fuel oil
to operate. On account of this oil
shortage the quicksilver cannot be
shipped from the mines.
A fox will chn.se Its own tail and
cut curious capers in the presence of
rabbits, that seem entranced by the
comedy until a sudden dnsh by the fox
changes the scene to tragedy.
