THE EUGENE REGISTER. GUABD
Hi
Eugene Townies To Play Wolfer's Federals For Oregon State League Le
THE OLD FOX HIMSELF!
Where the teams piny:
Federals at Eugene.
Salem at Henri.
Scbnpp's at Albany.
The Eugene Townies will play
Wolfer's Federals at the fairgrounds
this afternoon. The game will be
called at 2:30, A large crowd Is
expected, since this tilt will decide
the league lead,
and may have an
important bearing
on the outcome of
the Oregon State
league pennant
chase.
Both clubs will
e stronger than at
any time this sea
son, and both will
be out to win
any cost. Eugene
will have Del Rus
sell, who starred
earlier in the 'iea-
jack Van Duvn son, back at an in'
field post, and Chuck Wirth will
also play. Wirth was unable to make
the trip to Bend two weeks ago, and
the locals' overwhelming loss waa
partially due to his absence.
The Federals hare enlisted the aid
of the two Grayson brothers, Buck
and Bobby, and their addition should
materially strengthen the Portland
club. Buck Grayson starred at first
base for three yeara at Oregon State
college, while Bobby is a Stanford
football and baseball star.
Bob Wiltshire, Eugene pitcher will
probably get the hurling assignment,
with Cecel Inman on hand to relieve
him. Dick Bishop, the league's out
standing catcher,' will work behind
the plate. Either Don Husband or
Bun Kelsey will handle first base,
while Russell will probably perform
at second. - Chuck Wirth will play
short. Bill Reinhart has yet to select
starting third Backer.
The outfield bertha will go to Jack
Tan Duyn, Cotter Gould, Al Diets
or Jack Gordon, and it Is possible
Skipper Reinhart may take care of
one of the nine poats. Una Federals
battery has not been announced, but
they have a . large hurling ataff, and
. Eugene will probably hare plenty of
trouble collecting base hits. Either
Richards or Warren will receive tor
them.
Champion Whipped
By Lucille Robinson
CHICAGO, Aug. 12. OP) Lucille
Robinson, a tomely youngster from
Dea Uoinee, Iowa, dealt the national
champion, Virginia Van WIe, Chicago,
6 to S lacing today to win the
Women's Western open golf title,
prise that has eluded the Chicago
star for nine yeara.
Mis! Boblnion had played fine
golf throughout the tournament, but
waa accorded no more than an out
side chance of defeating Miis Van
Wie who until today played at the
top of her game. Today, however,
the champion went about her work
with surprising Indifference, and was
on top only until the eleventh holt
of the morning round. The young
Iowan, erratic and brilliant by turns,
waa one down at the morning turn,
but steadied and defeated her famoua
opponent with amaalng ease.

Virginia Stacks To
Be Given Honor
It looks like a real ball game at
the fairgrounda today. While the
tilt Isn t a final championship battle,
It will probably have an important
Dearlng on the winner of the Oregon
State league pennant. If Eugene
can defeat the Federals, they should
have an excellent chance, barring UP'
seta, to come through with the flag,
while the some is true of the Port'
landers.
The two teams are tied for the
league lend, each having 7 wins and
4 losses. This will be the third game
played between these clubs, and each
lias a victory to lta credit. Today's
tilt will be the last meeting, and
each ia anxious to cop the aeries.

CLEVELAND. Aug. 12. (U.R
Twelve-year-old Frank Falasa couldn't
desert his bsseball team, even after
he was bit on the bead with a bat.
As a result he was deed today.
The boy was star catcher for the
Comrades, a team of youthful soft
ball players. His team was leading.
With a man on first, a pinch-hitter
waa sent to bat by the opposing
team.
Anxious to hold the runner
first after the pitch, Frankie stepped
too near the plate. The awinging
bat struck him just behind the ear,
knocking him down.
Knowing his team had no other
catcher, Frankie picked himself up,
rubbed his bead, and resumed hit
place behind the bat.
The Comrades, won the game,
Frankie went home. But he had no
appetite for his supper. Stanley
Palasz, his father, noticed he ap'
peared dazed and questioned him.
Learning of the blow on the head
he called a physician.
The boy died before he could be
taken to the hospital. The blow had

In almost two yeara, and the Straw
berry Grower swears that Otis Cling
man, who is slated to give him the
add test, will wish it waa his last.
Jones has been more, than willing
to wrestle on Owen's cards for some
time, but the local promoter has hesi
tated to use him aince there axe few
good welters in the vicinity at thla
time. However, Jones showed up at
tne armory Thursday night and chal
lenged every middleweight in the
county, state or country, and promised
to beat them, notwithstanding the
weight he must give away.
This week's match should be'
knockout (figuratively apeaking, since
Thor Jensen Isn't wrestling) and
Jonea will match his years of experi
ence and ring craft against Cling.
mans youth and strength. Jonea'
famed whip wristlocks are aa vicious
aa ever, but the venerable Utah gent
will find plenty of dynamite in the
Sailor'a chinlocks, which have felled
many a good man and true.
The coming of Jones swells to four
times the number of men here capable
of making the weight for a title match
with Jack Reynolds later in the sea
son, and Henry doesn't mind admit
ting that he ia the. logical opponent
for the champ. Jonea feels that
Owen a previous refusals to match
him with the middleweights are a
personal affront, and he will be out
to ahow up the promoter by whip
ping Clingman aoundly.
Owen has not announced hla spe
cial event, but says it will be nearly
on par with the main go, which
should spell plenty of sction. All in
all, it looks like a great card, with a
grand old campaigner meeting the
most- popular boy ever to wrestle
here.
