ROLAND GARROS STADIL'M,
Ailtoilil, Frunce, July 21.t)'rhe
British Davis cup tennis forces put
their American rivals to rout today
in the interzone finals with two spec
tacular straight set singles victories.
Fred Perry, British No, 1, conquer
ed Wilmer Allison, 6-1, 7-5, 6-4, after
Henry W. (Bunny) Auston, second
ranking Englishman, sprang a sensa
tional upset by trouncing Ellsworth
Vines, the American champion, 6-1,
0-1, 6-4.
Austin, the second ranking player
of the English team and considered
tho "weak" link in the singles, out
played VineB from start to finish in
one of the biggest tennis upsets of
recent years. He pounded the Ameri
can's backhand to pieces in the first
two sets, during which he broke
through Vines' service five out of
seven times, and had sufficient re
serve to bent back his rival's last,
desperate attempt to stem the tide in
tbe third set.
Vines never looked like a champion
after winning the first gam of tbe
first set. He was wild, he double-
faulted frequently and seemed alto
gether baffled by the Briton's splen
did control and keen tactics. Once he
found Vines uncertain, Austin, never
reiaxea tne pressure.
The outcome stunned the Ameri
cans as well as a near-capacity crowd.
which saw the British gain an unex
pected lead, before their No. 1 ace,
Fred Perry, tackled Wilmer Allison
in the second singles match.
