This question was answered on the
campus of the University of Oregon
recently, when answers to a question
naire sent to 103 representative stu
dents were compiled. The study was
carried on by members of two honor
societies, under the direction of Louise
Webber, Portland, president of the
Associated Women Students.
Personal Interest in students,
friendliness, sympathy and understanding-
were the dualities most de
sired by women, while men put a sense
of humor and Individuality down- n
highly important.
The answers also exploded the pet
theory held by many that faculty
members in a university hold them
selves aloof from students, for 1)6 out
of the 103 revealed that they had at
least one member of the teaching
ataff to whom they went to discuss
courses, vocational ambitions and
other problems. Only two stated def
initely that they had no one to whom
thev could to for such help.
The men students, the survey re
vealed, would Just as soon talk to
some member of the faculty about
their personal problems as to their
parents. Women students usually an
swered this In the negative, but ft Is
Itellevcd that the fact that many more
men than women are faculty advisers
might have some Influence here.
! The fear that they might be ac
cused of "handshaking" was held to be
a deterrent In close friendship with
faculty members by many, although
nearly all agreed that knowing a pro
fessor outside of class enabled them
to gain more in their courses.
The common meeting place most
often given was the classroom, al
though several men reported contact
through fraternities.
Student activities, especially In
Journalism and music, play an Im
portant pnrt in drawing students and
faculty together, It was declared by
many. Here again the classroom was
the moBt common meeting place.
The survey was ono of tho projects
carried on as a part of the work In
the class In personal guidance prob
lems, of which Karl W. Onthank, dean
of the persnnuel administration, Is In
structor. The data here will be com
pared with that of similar studies car
ried on In other Institutions. Several
other projects are also under way by
various members of the class.

was killed last night when he was
struck by an automobile In the street
In front of his home. Police sold
Johanson had been given a ride home
from work and was crossing the
street when a car driven by J. B.
Harrison of Portland knocked him
to the pavement. Harrison, In a
futile effort to avoid the collision,
swerved his machine and after It

An Incorrect report about frees

system, at the Thurston grade school
building was sent In last week-end
and the school reported closed Friday
afternoon. However, the water sys
tem at the school building is in fine
condition and the pipes well protected
so that the cold of the past week
