Prize By Collier's
Mrs. Beatrice B. Beebe, 1301 Twenty-first
avenue east, teacher of Eng
lish in the Eugene high school, won
third prize of $50 from Collier's mag
azine thi sweek in its "write your
own" manuscript contest.
Each week Collier's submits a story
in modified form and the contestants
are asked to write a complete story
from it. The first prize is ,$W0, the
second $75 and the third $50 each
week. Mrs. Beebe was given third
prize for her story inspired by the
story of Ulenspeigel and the paintless
painting.

Dog Loses Fight
To Save Master
From Mad Bull
LATAH, Wash., Oct. 21 CP The
story of a Uevman shepherd dog's un
successful fijjbc to save his mauler
from death on the horns of a bull
was told here today,
iteorge -Miller, 78, one of tho
earliest settlers ft this region, was
driving cows on his farm near here
yesterday afternoon when tho bull
charged him. The dog, following the
aged man, sprang to his defense, but
not before the animal gored him. The
dog drove the animal away, holding
him at bay until Mrs. Miller and a
son, who witnessed the tragedy from
distance, summoned help. Miller
died 12 hours later.
Miller, who came to this region
from Oregon more than 50 years ago,
bad been prominent in public affairs,
having held numerous school district
and county offices. His widow, three
sons and four daughters survive him.
