YOUR CHILDREN
By OLIVE ROBERTS BARTON
A RE we interested in what our
- children are dolus, or more In
terested in what concerns ourselves?
By "selves" . I mean those thing
concerning tne cnimren that repre
sent ua rather than them.
For instance, the other day, at a
junior high school commencement in
wmcn a . l-year-old girt took part,
this happened.
All week the child had studied her
part. She waa too much excited over
plans for the great day to eat her
meats.
Every second she was out of the
class room she waa in the auditor
ium watching the decorations being
tacked up. Every second she was at
uuwu sue wan Buiug wver ner speeca,
talking about the program what this
one was going to do, what that teach
er said, what pupil had forgotten his
lines at rehearsal. '
Her mother was working on her
dress, It was of simple plain white
with a little white . cape over the
shoulders.
During fittings this la a sample
of the conversations.
'My, but I'll be glad when this
la all over! If it weren't that you
could wear this dress all summer
tor good, I d never be bothered mak
ing it." . .
''But you want me to look nice,
don't you mother! - All the girls are
wearing white."
"Oh, yes, I want you to look nice,
of course. But I just think it is all
nonsense having this commencement."
A Selfish Parent
"But It's such fun, mother. We
feel so big and grown-up commenc
ing, you know. AH the boys and girls
are having such a good time,"
Then a terrible thought. struck her.
"You're comma-, nren't von. mother ?"
"Yes, I'll be there. I want to see
wbat kind of a dress Mrs-. McKee
made for Grace. She's talked so
much about it, it must be wonderful."
"It couldnt be any lovelier than
this, mother."
"Well, T hope not,, after all my
trouDie. wnen you wear this dress,
Betty. T want you to curl your hair.
I'll put it up in those little wavers
I bought the other dny.
"But T look better with my hair
plain. I look awful in waves."
"You'll do as T say, my dear. You
must look your best."
"All right." assented Betty. "Is
that all now? Ts the fitting over? If
you have a minute won't you please
hear my speech to see if I know it?"
"I haven't time now."
At last commencement day came.
But Betty had the feeling that her
mother was not in the least interested.
F.ven when it was over, the only
thing she talked about was the dresses
the girls wore.
Are we like this? De we live sel
fishly in our children., or do we live
their joys and their dreams and their
plans with them?
Too often not. T am afraid.
