An emergency crew of IS men Is st
work grading the short stretch pf
road between the south end of the
Lowell bridge and the end of the oiled
road. It was announced Friday by
Raymond Walsh, resident state high
way engineer.
This stretch of road is a little over
a mile long, and baa been one of the
worst places on the Willamette high
way. Grading work will prepare the
road for oiling, Mr. Walsh said.
Several bad curves are being elimi
nated and the road being brought up
to the standard requirements of the
Willamette highway.

ed orders of 215 identical mills re
porting to the West Coast Lumber
men's association in the week ending
January 23 Increased 1,600,000 feet
over the previous week.
A total of 324 mills reporting to
the West Coast Lumbermen's asso
ciation for the week ending January
23 operated at 23.0 per cent of capac--ity,
as compared to 22.1 per cent ca
pacity for the previous week and 38.0
per cent for the aame week last year.
During the week ended January 16,
217 of these plants were reported as
down and 107 as operating those op
erating reported production as 47.5
per cent of their group cansdty.
Current new business reported by
215 Identical mills was 24 per cent
over production and totsled 3,870.000
feet more than the footage received
the previous week. This is the 13th
successive week with orders In excess
of production, the longest continuous
period in at least 10 years in which
orders were reported in greater vol
ume than production. The present
better relationship between orders
and production is due to the current
