Beatrice, it might come to be one of
those beautiful, passing dreams "
"Dare I Well, Ermintrude Hill, if
you think I'd back down now, at this
crucial time, after" Jlary-i'rances
stopped, caught her breath sharply.
Deep annoyance, coupling ao sudden
ly with her intense excitement, had
all but betrayed her "after we've
promised Mis Byerly that we'd take
part and everything "
Miss Byerly was their Sunday
school teacher.
Ann hung up the dishoan. and
turned on the faucet above the sink.
and swished the water about with a
brush, and decided to let that de for
this evening. Phil, surely, would be
here now before long. Phil was late
again, bhe did not mind, because ahe
had heard or read that the aecret of
successful love lay not in ignoring
faults but in recognizing them and
not minding them.
Tears ago, when Phil had always
been early, she had not minded that,
and so, sensibly, there was no reason
for minding now because he was al
ways late. Probably it was merely a
habit and not a fault at all; or were
habits and faults the same?
She took two damp tea towels
from the seat of a chair and went to
hang them on the rack above the
stove. It was mean of Mary-Frances
to skip off, as she had, before the tin
ware was washed. It bad been sweet
of Cecily to offer to help, though she
should have known Ann would not al
low it when ahe had company. Cecily
was in love. For nearly 10 minutes
Ann had forgotten it. Poor Cissy
Ann caught it back and tried to cor
rect it. She likes it, of course. I am
in love, and I like it. Of course I like
it. I must like being in lore with Phil
who is always late.
She turned out the kitchen light
and went through the big dining
room Into the front hall. Mary-Frances
waa coming quietly down the
stairs, and she tipped her chin to
sauciness as she answered Ann's
question.

SALEM, Ore., Dec. 21. U.F A
first edition law book, regardless of
age, isn't nearly as enticing as some
thing recreational and old, say
Shakespeare or Dickens.
"The hundreds of old volumes on
law in the state supreme court library
are worth about one-tenth of what
is cheerfully paid for contemporary
editions of the old and famous au
thors dealing in non-technical sub
jects," Librarian Edward Gillingham
commented.
"About the most valuable book In
the entire library collection is the
first book of Judgments, printed in
England in 1655. Although experi
enced collectors declare they have
seen only two volumes of this edition,
cost of the book is placed between
$2U0 and $300 dollars.
"Included among other rarefies in
the supreme court library are a four
volume first edition of Blackstotie's
commentaries, a first edition of Coke's
institutes, printed in 1628, and a
treatise on Maritime lawa. sir l no
mas Seabright. baronet, was publisher
of the nautical English volume in
1636. It was written almost 8U0
years ago."
Insane Patients
May Be Re-Committed
SALEM, Ore.. Dec. 21. U.R
uut-r-t-county patients committed to
the state hosnitals for insane by Uma
tilla or Marion county judgea will
probably be re-committed as from
their own sections.
A controversy that recently arose
as result of counties being charged for
care of patieiits who are actunlly
residents of some other section will no
doubt be amicably settled. Ben Wing,
in charge of collections for upkeep of
non-violentiy insane, said.
Prior to enactment of the 1031 law
providing that those patients who are
financially able shall pay tor their
keep at the teehle minded or state
hospital Institutions, counties had no
incentive to be atrict regarding com
mitment and resident qualifications,
Wing explained.
