era. The direction was in the hands
of Richard Wallace, whose uncanny
ability for heightening dramatic ef
fects, observed in his recent drama
with Ruth Cbatterton, "The Right to
Love," has here full display.
The romantic team of Joan Craw
ford and Clark Gable will come to
the Fox McDonald theatre today and
Monday in a dramatic story of a fac
tory girl who becomes the toast of
Broadway and Park Avenue. "Pos
sessed." Miss Crawford's role of the work
ing girl who turns down her lover in
order that he may rise to an impor
tant political position In his state
gives her ample opportunity to dis
play her dramatic prowess. Iter trans
formation from a plain girl working
in a factory to a member of the lei
sure class entails sixteen costume
changes and many spectacular scenic
backgrounds.
Gable is seen as the candidate for
governor while Wallace Ford, popu
lar New York stage leading man,
makes his screen debut as Gable's
rival for the affections of the heroine.
The supporting cast includes Skeets
Gallagher, John Mi I Jan. and Marjorie
White.

the terrace outside the royal palace
of the kingdom of Luvaria during a
state ball, and the majority of men in
attendance are dressed in the gor
geous uniforms of their vnrious mil
itary units, llelmeted guards stand nt
attention before the great doors, and
beautiful women In court dress throng
the terrace.
The gigantic setting for these scene?
was erected "on the lot" at Universal
City, California. In these scenes ap
peared all the principal players of
"The Boudoir Diplomat.' including
Betty Compson. Ian Keith. Mary
Duncan, Jeanetle Loff, Lawrence
Grant, Lionel Belmore and Andre
Beranger. Malcolm St. Clair directed.

IN "AGE FOR LOVE"
When Kdward Everett Tlorton Im
mortalized the role of the antiseptic
and highbrow newspaper reporter in
"The Fmnt Page," it was quite gen
erally believed that he had turned in
his greatest characterization. Rut
when Howard Hughes encaged the
comedian for the role of Horace
Rents, the dyspeptic and insomniac
literary broker, in "The Age for
Love," Horton turned the trick once
again and delivered an impersonation
which tops all his previous efforts.
Horton, the highest-salaried free
lance actor in motion pictures, has a
habit of "stealing the show" and grab
bing off most of the laughs. He is no
exception in "The Age for Love," and
at the Fox McDonald theatre where
the Himhes picture plays Tuesday
and 'Wednesday he will panic audienc
es with his inimitable humor.
The famous comedinn is one of the
busiest actors in Hollywood, and one
of the wenlthiest. He owns several
estates, including a palatini summer
home at Lake George. New York, but
spends most of his spare time on his
big ranch in the Sun Fernando val
ley, near Hollywood. Resides pre
senting Horton in his most interest
ing portrayal "The Age for Love," the
United Artists release, brings Rillio
Dove back to the screen after eigh
teen months' absence, in the finest
performance of her career. It fea
tures also, Charles Starrett, Lois Wil
son, Mary Duncan, Adrian Murris
and others.
Gloria Swanson Is
Playing At State
Gloria Swanson has an appealing
role as "Jerry Trent,'1 the modern
miss In her latest United Artists pic
ture. "Indiscreet," which comes to
the State theatre today. As a young
woman who has very definite ideas
on how to treat men, Miks Swanson
puts her modern ideas to work, and
the result provides numerous dramat
ic situations that reach a climax when
her fiance discovers her in a compro
mising position with a former admirer
whom she is trying to prevent from
marrying her sister.
"Indiscreet" Is an original story

'X Marks the Spot
Coming To State
The long awaited "X Marks the
Spot," Tiffany pictures super special
for this season will soon have a
showing at the State theatre, accord
ing to Eddie Lewis, manager, who Is
getting a big publicity campaign linid
up to help put the picture over for its
first Bhowing in this city.
"X Marks the Snot," is a thrilling
mystery drama with a cast of knock
out players including Lew Cody, Sully
Hlane, Fred Koliler, Mnry Nolan,
Richard Tucker and the screen's
newest juvenile leading man. Wullace
Ford.

Grant Withers, one of the start ef

lig theatre on Wednesday is an agile
diver and expert swimmer, but Thei

plays opposite Kir. Withers In this
excellent talkie, while also adept at
the aouatic sports, cununt swim in
extremely cold water. Miss Todd's
peculiar sensitiveness to low water
temperature, nearly cost her her lifi

In one of the dramatic scenes of
Swanee River Miss Todd had to en
ter an ice-cold stream clinging to Mr.
W there arm. Suddenly a severe
cramn attacked the girl and she grip
ped Mr. Withers arm with almost
superhuman strength. As the cam
eras and sound eouioment were re
cording every move and sound of the
struggling counle. Mr. withers had
the presence of mind to remember
not to adopt toe usual mctnoU in such
cases.
For almost an hour this uneven
struggle continued before Mr. With
ers could steer a courso for the op
posite bank of the river. He finally
reached his goal, but so exhausted
was he from the trip across the. swol
len stream that work was called off
for the remainder of the day.
