Funeral services were held here today
for John I. Sturgill, SO, a resident of
eastern Oregon since 1S05. He died
at Union Saturday.
Sturgill, who served as county as
sessor of Baker county when Grant
county wos part of thp district, was
born in Missouri in 1V1. He crossed
the plains by ox team in isr5( locating
in the Wingvillo district, of Baker
county. In ISsl he married .Mary
Stevenson in Elgin.
Sturgill assisted in the. capture of
Chief Joseph in the Indian skirmish
in Wallowa county, and won recogni
tion from tho government for this
service.
