rHciiilon of plans for trade e
tenalon and promotion, perfecting
plana for closer co-operatlon be
tween the manufacturer, wholoaaler
and retailer, looking to a wider dis
tribution of lumber product! and
working out plana for an In
tensified soiling campaign, occu
pied most of the time at a meeting
of the Nalional Lumber Mnini lectur
er's association In Chicago Novem
ber 6, 7, and 8, according to A. C.
Dixon, general manager of the Booth
Kelly Lumber company, who ii presi
dent of tho nnnonnl group. Mr.
Dixon returned to Kngene Monday
and after a brief trip to Portland
cams borne Thursday night. He had
been gone for more than three
weeka.
Mr. Dixon wne not pessimistic In
his tone In discussing conditions In
the lumber market and business
conditions in general. There is a
great deal of unemployment through
out the east, he said, but measures
are being taken everywhere to alle
viate aa far as possible distress and
suffering caused by the depression in
business.
The executive board of the Na
tional Lumber Manufacturers' as
sociation called upon Hufuj Dawes,
an outstanding financier of Chicago
and president of the "Century of
Progress," which is the name of the
big world exposition to be held in
that citv In 1HS3. The project will
cost ?SO,Ono,OnO, according to esti
mates, and already construction on
different buildings haa been etnrted.
It Is planned to enrry the project
through to completion, said Mr.
Dixon. The executive board pre
sented plans and blue prints looking
toward the use of lumber In the con
struction of the large number of
buildings and Mr. Dawes assured the
members that a major of the build
ings will be of that type.
On November 11 a special com
mittee from the lumbermen's associa
tion, of which Mr. Dixon was
chairman, went to Washington, D. C,
and called upon President Hoover,
Attorney-General Mitchell, bis as
sistant, John Lord O'Hrion, Secre
tary of Agriculture Hyde, Chief
Forester Major Stuart, Secretary
Mellon, Secretary of Commerce I.a
Mont, and Col. Arthur Woods, whom
the president has appointed head of
the group to look into the unem
ployment situation.
In these conferences the lumber
men attempted to bring about a bet
ter understanding of the lumber
business, and a discussion of the
importation of Russian lumber is
believed to have been productive of
results.
Among other things discussed was
the lumbermen's part in the unem
ployment problem, said Mr. Dixon,
and the matter of President Hoover's
proposed timber conservation lioard
was talked of. Thia board is aoon to
be appointed. The personnel is to be
made up of men who are retired
or have a great deal of time which
they can devote to the work. The
purpose of the board will be to
ascertain bow much timber there la
In the United Statea and how long
It will last. Tho' work of the board
will be very exhaustive, said Mr.
Dixon.
