66th Birthday
C'hemawa Indian school will
celebrate Its With hHhlay Mon
day, February 25. with a big birth
day party In the school (jym. The
festivities will Include a b;ill, In
dian dances, the cutting of a gi.mt
birthday cake, and the crowning
of a birthday ueen. The: queen's
Identity will not be disclosed until
the night of coronation. The birth
day cake, made in the school bak
ery, will be five layer high and
have 86 candles burning at its top.
It will be large enough to provide
a generous piece lor each of the
530 students together with the
staff members and many guests.
The C'hemawa tchool was found
ed Feb. 25, 1880, only a few
months after the famous Carlisle
Indian school o that it is now
since the closing of Carlisle the
oldest school in the Indian serv
ice. First established at Forest
Grove, Chemawa was moved; to
its present site, five mils north
of Salem, in 1885.
MyrtHus W. Evans is superin
tendent of the school and will be
the principal speaker at the pro
gram. Coquelle Thompson, boys'
adviser, will be the master of cere

She had gone there a month ago
to be with a daughter.

when she was seven years old.
Survivors include five-children,
