Slock Market
Continues Fast
Trend Down
NEW YORK, Feb. 20-(4VThe
third successive day of tumbling
prices sliced 1 to 7 points off
leading stocks in today's market.
While the pace of the decline
slowed appreciably from Tues
day's precipitate drop, the down
turn has wiped nut nearly 35 per
cent of the average gain made by
stocks in the cttmb to 15 -year
peaks since the Japanese surren
der last August.
Steelg, rails, motors, rubbers,
and a number of "blue chip" is
sues were subject to selling pres
sure from the open inn. Slight re
coveries from the lowest levels
were accomplished by some of the
leaders. Total transfers were 2,
150.000 shares compared with 2,
300,000 Tuesday.
Customers were described as
concerned over the government's
newest wage-price policy and the
possible effects of its adjustments
on Individual companies. Continu
ing as a drag on sentiment were
obstinacy of wage deadlocks,
threats of further strikes; and an
ticipation of unfavorable; earnings
in nearby 1944 periods.
In the Associated Press aver
ages the 60-stock index declined
16 for the day to 74 4. A drop
of 2.1 points carried the 30 -stock
industrial average to 99.3, below
100 for the first time since Jan. 7.
