Fire Association .
Celebrates 50th
Anniversary
STAYTON, Jan. 31-Special)-Reelected
at a meeting of the Sub
limity Fire Relief association were
George A. Sandner, Scio, presi
dent; Andrew Fery,' Stayton, vice
president; Fred Hottinger, Stay
ton, secretary-treasurer; M. Wel
nacht, director, Woodburn. Jack
Hayes, from th state fire marsh
al's office, and William Leary,
with the state Insurance commis
sion, spoke before the group!
The group was organized July
26, 1896, with Charles Fischer
president and Charles Hottinger
secertary-treasurer. In December
of the same year the first annual
meeting was held with 26 appli
cants. The association was incor
porated Nov. 10, 1897, as a "be
nevolent association." Later a
millage was assessed members.
August Albus.Js the only living
charter member.
Andrew Fery is the oldest mem
ber of the board, in point of ser
vice, having been a member for
35 years. Fery and Henry Stein
kamp spoke about the early days
of the association. It has always
been the- custom to hold the an
nual meeting at Sublimity. The
office is located at the home of
Fred Hottinger In Stayton.

Missionary Group
Meets at Church
TURNER, Jan 31 -(Special)-The
i women of the : missionary
society mi the Christian church
met In the church parlor Thurs
day afternoon with 10 members
present. New officers are presi
dent,1 Mrs. George Kellems, vice
president, Mrs. W. H. Griffin,
secretary, Mrs. Gene Robinson,
treasurer, Mrs. E. J. Gilstrap.
An offering of $958, was sent
Cagayan, Philippine Islands. Used
clothing is also being sent to mis
sionaries of these islands.
A record of the past year shows
that the society has paid $279.15
toward foreign and home mis
sion benevolence and schools.
Eugene Bailey
Memorial Planned
SILVERTON, Jan. 31-(Special)
Memorial services, for Donald
Eugene Bailey, son of Mr. and
Mrs. : Homer Bailey of Silverton,
are being planned or the near
future.
Young Bailey was reported
missing in action on the submar
ine Shark, in November, 1944, and,
in December of 1945 was listed
as officially dead. Exact plans for
the memorial services have not
been made but likely they will
be held in early February.
Bailey attended school at Sil
verton, finishing with the 1942
class.

Folk are moving in Aurora. Mrs.
Art Lrttenmier ha bought the
home of the late Jennie Michel
which is on Bob's avenue, and
has moved from the farm to Au
rora. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Meter
are occupying the apartments in
the Lettenmier building over the
postoffice, formerly occupied by
the Walton family who recently
moved to Bend. Mr. James Ogle
has moved to the apartments in
the building owned by the Com
munity club.

Recent visitors at the home of
Mr. and Mrs. James G. Pale were
Mrs. L. W. Morris of Juneau.
Alaska, Pate's sister, Frank Pate
of Albany, also a brother. Mrs.
Ben Russell of Marion, their
mother, is ill in the Albany hos
pital. Stanley Miller, a V-12 student
at the University of Washington,
was recently pledged by Tau
Beta Pi engineers scholastic hon
orary society. Miller is the son
of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Miller
and a senior this year.
.Mrs. Steve Bowman of Umleigh
was a guest Saturday night of
the John Hendersons. Sunday the
Hendersons took their guest to
Gervais.
