rye passing $2 a bushel for the
first time in 25 years. May oats
reaching the 111 rent ceiling, and
new seasonal highs established in
many contracts.
May rye climbed almost the 5
cent daily limit and hit $2.02 at
one time while wheat and oats
were up more than a cent occa
sionally.
Bullish -influences included
traders' belief that ceilings will
be raised, strong demand for cash
grain and continued evidence of
a tight supply, and reports that
Belgium is in the domestic mar
ket for 875.000 bushels of oats
and about 380,000 bushels of
brewing barley.

death of Maj. Gen. John J. Ph
Ian, former chairman of the New
York state athletic commission,
saddened the boxing world today
almost a year to the day after he
had been honored for "long and
meritorious service" to the sport.
Phclan had been in poor health
since last April when he was no
tified that his son, Lt. Col. John
J. Phelan, Jr., had been killed in
action, in Italy.
