I Tucked away in this corner of
a man's prison world are 27 wo
men currently paying tbeir debts
They include two lifers,

criminal and one in for 10 years

. the average stay of a woman at
the (Ute pea is two to .three
' rears.
And the criminal charges that
r put women behind bars are as
' varied as those for the male in
mates. Warden Clarence T. Glad-
den says.. ,
Yet the problems facing both
' the woman prisoner and the Bri
ton administration are very oil
- ferent
,, ; The biggest problems la terms
: of housing, rehsbillUtioei
grams and general administration
. stem from the comparatively low
number ef women who an sen-

The female prison population

A Problem
But here ngain space la a prob
lem. Several years ago, when the
Women's Prison Council spon
sored a square dance class for tbe
women, the noise from the second
floor almost drove the warden out
of his downstairs office.
"Women prisoners aront escape
risks," Warden Gladden says. He
recalls only one woman ever
eaping from the state prison and
none during tbe tour years of hit
administration.
Yet they are kept under maxi
mum security regulations in their
present quarters the most ex
pensive type of imprisonment to
maintain. ,
Individual disagreements cauas
the major, discipline problems
among women prisoners, he points
out.
When the population in their
section rises, the problems rise
too. ' no adds. .- $ '. - , . .

At advocate of separate rooms
for all prisoners. Warden Gladden
believes women especially need
the privacy of tingle rooms.
There are now six single rooms
on the third floor along tha sleep

the women share rooms three or
