Dear Ann Landers
She's Drowning in
Sea of Easy Debts
By ANN LANDERS
Dear Ann: I'm in a mess and too ashamed to go to anyone
I know. Please tell me what to do. I'm going crazy.
I'm drowning in a sea of debts and there's no land in sight.
I've been married almost five years and my husband makes a
good salary. He's always given me his check and kept a small
allowance" for lunches and gasoline. I've obligated myself all over
town. I bought a color TV set, new refigerator, new rugs, an auto
matic washer, and many things which seemed easy to handle on
time payments.
Now I'm afraid to answer the door or the phone for fear it's a
bill collector. If my husband knew of the shape we were in fi
nancially I'm afraid he'd break my neck.
Don't give me a bawling out. I know I deserve it, Ann, but
what I need is a way out of this mess. IN DEEP
The first think to do Is pull yourself together and make a list
of your debts. Decide how much yon can pay on each bill every
week. Go to your creditors and tell them you're In a bind. -Explain
yon intend to pay your bills In full, and ask them to be
patient. Then, take an oath on a stack of duhnlng letters that
you're not going to buy one nickel's worth nntil yon're completely
out of hock. .
Your real problem is self discipline. Once you've put your
foot down (on your pocket book) you'll be surprised at how many
things yon can live without.
Dear Ann: Is "there any way I can convince the girls I meet
that a man doesn't have to be tall to be 'a good husband? I'm S
feet 6, 'the same height as Carmen Basilio.
Ever since my college days I've been jilted for a taller man.
I'm 42 years old and still a bachelor. The average girl is shorter
than I am. Why does a five foot girl insist on a six foot man?
Shouldn't a girl be content with sobriety, honor, kindness, loyalty
and intelligence, regardless of physical height? If a man is a
cheat, a liar and a drunk does it make him less attractive if there's
six feet of him lying in jail or staggering in the gutter?
I've contacted matrimonial agencies, Get-Acquainted Groups
and Lonely Hearts Clubs but I find that 3 out of 4 women specify
a man must be tall. What's the answer? G.L.B. x
I haven't got an answer, but I do have a question. Why does
a man with honor, sobriety, klndnssw, loyalty and Intelligence look
for a wife in a matrimonial agency or a Lonely Heart Club?
What In the world kind of a woman do you expect to find In
such places? I can tell you. Or better still, you tell me you've
had the experience. Short men get married every day must be
another reason you'r single. -.
(Ann Landers will be glad to help you with your problems.
Send them to her in care of this newspaper and enclose a stamped
, self -addressed envelope.) '

Strawberries Show
Sty le Whenever Used
By MAXINE BUREN
Statesman Woman's Editor
Most folks look upon strawberries as a elamorous food, and we
will go along with the majority, for no matter how often during the
all-too-short season strawberries appear on the menu, or how often
they appear in frozen form iq winter, we always consider them
something very special. There's still time to enjoy those berries this
season, tney re coming in from the hills.
I've eaten the hard red balls called "strawberries" in New York.
and the lovely long pointed Jordbaer of Denmark, and no matter
what the flavor or the looks, they ere welcomed. Our's fresh from
the warm sun, are tops in then- circles,, and I'll take a plain vine
ripened Marshall from the field across the road just any da in
preference to the most elegant dessert a chef can devise.
But we can strike a happy medium too. between- the back-to-na
ture berry eater and the city chef who does a lot of fixing to cover
up the fact that his ingredients have seen better days. Let's look at
what we can do by way of elegance in cheese pies, using our own
Deautitui nerries. -
StrawberryXheese Pie
1 8-ounce package cream cheese, V teaspoon salt
softened teaspoon vanilla
Vi cup sugar 1 10-inch baked pastry shell
Vi cup light cream 1 pint fresh sliced strawberries
2 eggs, well beaten cup sugar
Combine cheese, cup sugar, bream, eggs, salt and vanilla:
beat until smooth. Turn into pastry shell. Bake in slow oven (300) 1
hour, or until knife inserted in center comes out clean. Cool. Combine
strawberries and Yt cup sugar; mix well. Top pie with strawberry
