Open noon 'til 9 p.m. daily. -1 At Oregon I Scholastic, Honorary Winners By LINDA STEELE -Statesman Correspondent EUGENE Even though Junior Weekend, for 1958 has .passed, many, new and wonderful memo ries remain with Salem students and their parents. Contest -winnings, awards, and tapping for honoraries , were all filled with names of outstanding Salem stu dents. Honorary tappings are always exciting and rewarding for the hard work done in activities and scholarship throughout the year. Richard Castle has been initiated into Phi Eta Sigma, underclass scholastic honorary. Dick main tained the high 3.5 grade point re quired for this honor. . Anne , Heltzel was tapped by Mortar Board, senior women's honorary. Kwama, sophomore women's service honorary chose Carol Stolk and Patricia Claggett for membership. Louis Parker was tapped for Skull and Dagger, sophomore men s service honor ary. Louis also received an Army ROTC Superior Cadet Ribbon Award. Raymond Utterback, junior in English, received a cash award for his .library of religious books entered in the annual student 11 brary contest. Stanley Page was elected to Asklepiads, men's pre- medical honorary. Patti Claggett, freshman in edu cation, was selected by the Student Union board as chairman of the S dance committee for next year Float Winners Tn Delt Mary Jane Waite is proud that her work on the "Yalu River" float will be remembered by their winning first place in the highly competitive - Canoe Fete Ed Syring will remember that his hours of work were worthwhile as the Sig Eps received second place for their float, "Columbia River." Betas Jim Allen, Dick Wulf, and Dale Jones will have good reason to remember this year's All Cam pus Sing as first place went to Beta Theta Pi fraternity for their rendition of "Someday. Even athletic events went well for Oregon this weekend as the Oregon Webfoot golfers, sparked by Salem's Bob Prall, won their 11th Northern Division golf, cham pionship in the past 12 seasons. Scholarship Awards An Associated Women Students' scholarship wars awarded to Judy Keler and Jackie LaDue received one of six Kwama scholarships. A scholastic award was present ed by the AWS to Marion S. Baum, a member of the Phi Beta, Kappa senior-six, who has the second highest scholastic record 'of any women in the senior class. Victoria Chapter Plans Installation TURNER At the regular meet ing of Victoria chapter, OES, members who had received pro ficiency certificates, were honored Honored guests present were M. Edwin Cox, worthy grand pa tron; Elsie Oliotti, grand commit tee member; Edna Hutichison, worthy matron of Marilyn chap ter; Edna Peterson Mrs. Loren Newkirk and Mrs. Cliff Carrick, grand representatives. The chapter was honored recent- fly when Mrs. Carl Booth, worthy matron was elected president for the coming year of the Willamette valley association. Plans were made for installation of officers June 14 at the Turner grade school. The degrees of the order will be conferred on two candi dates and new officers will be elec ted May 28. Miss Duggan to Wed Mr. Snyder WILLAMINA Announced this week was the June 1 wedding date of Miss Ruth Ellen Duggan, daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. M. E. Duggan of McMinnville, and Pfc. Robert Richard Snyder, son of Mr. and Mrs. Mearl Snyder of McMinnville. The wedding will take place at the First Presbyterian church in Mc Minnville. Miss Duggan attended the Willa mina and McMinnville schools, and Pfc. Snyder graduated from the McMinnville high school. He is serving with the army at Fort Ord, Calif., and will enter college in California this fall, following discharge from the army. Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Townsend entertained the Moon Shooters Pinochle Club at dinner and cards Saturday night. At Willamette Final Dance Of Season By BARBARA BONIFACE Statesman Correspondent This evening marks the last of the spring house dances on Will amette campus for this school year. With only ten more days of classes before finals the Phi Delta Theta fraternity plans to usher out the social calendar with a dance at Randall's Chuck Wagon tonight and will entertain their guests in a South Pacific atmosphere to the theme of "Mahlini Holiday." Da vid Marsters of Salem is in charge of the affair. Awards for outstanding service were presented at Chapel in the Fine Arts auditorium Thursday. Scholarship trophies for the high est grade point house average for the fall semester went to Delta Gamma sorority and Beta Theta Pi fraternity. Among the ten freshmen men tapped for Sigma Alpha Chi, sopho more men s honorary, was fresh man Jim Wright, North Salem High graduate. Sophomore women s honorary tapped Marcia Humphrey, Salem, and Gail Larsen, Silverton into membership. Dean Bishoprick of Woodburn was named to the senior men's honorary, Omicron Delta Kappa. Carole Warren, junior from Salem, paid recognition to several freshmen women who take part in Angel Flight. These included Sue Jenkins and Kathy Evans, North high graduates, going into their second year at Willamette. Engagement of Miss Dixon Told NORTH HOWELL-Of interest to people of North Howell, is the forthcoming marriage of Louise Dixon, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Dixon of Woodburn, to Robert Sprague, son of Mr. and Mrs. Eldred Sprague of Puyallup, Wash. The wedding will be solem nized on June 28th at the or ganized church of the Latter Day Saints in Woodburn. Mrs. Dixon, mother of the bride elect, is the former Alice Dunn of the North Howell district. WSCS Elects JEFFERSON Mrs. William E. Smith was elected president of the Methodist Woman's Society of Christian Service at the Monday meeting. Mrs. Les Shields is the retiring president. Other officers named are Mrs. Harold Wynd, vice president; Mrs. 0. A. Hall, secre tary, and Mrs. Francis Phelps, treasurer. J Sojourners Are Entertained at Dessert 'Bridge The Sojourners were entertained at a dessert luncheon and bridge party on Thursday at the Salem Woman's Club. The May Pole theme was featured in the decor with pastel candles and streamers. Bouquets of iris were arranged about the room. The overall grade point aver age of those receiving these honors was 3.68. Delores Loring Powers of Salem received the Chi Omega award given to the senior woman, who has been most influential among her associates and repre sents me. meajs oi intellect ana spirituality. Bruce Michels was a recipient of one of the five Duba'ch awards given to graduating senior men outstanding in perpetuation of high ideals and unselfish service - to OSC, and a member of Blue Key uara waido award, based on high standing in - each class in scholarship, success in student activities, qualities of womanhood, and qualities of leadership was presented to Pamela Clayton. Nancie Owens received the Lip- man Wolfes Award presented to the man or woman of highest standing in each class, based on scholarship, qualities of manhood or womanhood with special empha sis on unselfishness and kindness, qualities of leadership, and contri butions to campus welfare. Jane MoorefieM was given honorable mention for the award. Named te Honoraries - Phi Kappa Phi pledges were also introduced -at the convocation. This is a national scholastic honorary with membership based on schol astic attainment with three per cent, or 36, from the junior class, 7 per cent, or 60, seniors, 35 grad uate students and three faculty members. . Secretaries Hear Judge Hartley Judge Rex Hartley of the Marion County Court was guest speaker at the Tuesday educational - social meeting of Cascade Chapter, the National Secretaries Association In ternational, for which Mrs. Wilma Burchell and Miss Ilene Allen were hostesses. Judge Hartley's discus sion centered on the county s posi tion in the convoy of governmental services. Miss Clara Deyo was a guest. The Salem chapter is invited to attend the Oregon Trail Chapter's installation dinner at the Aero Club in Portland on June 11. E. Mittelstedt. home on Abrams Avenue Sunday evening. Miss Myers, daughter of Mrs. Vera Myers of West Linn, has at tended Cascade College in Port land and is now a senior at the University of Oregon Medical School of Nursing. The wedding is set for August 8 at the Portland First Evangelical United Brethren Church. The couple will live in Portland, where Mr. Mittelstedt will be attending school.
