Little Lebanon Long a Trouble Spot in World By ARTHUR EDSON WASHINGTON tmSomt areas seem born to be trouble ipoti, and little Lebanon is one- of them. The news from Lebanon is that heavy fighting has broken out " again; And the Western world anxiously watches as both bullets and recriminations fly. Well, it s always been thus in Lebanon. Such a tiny patch on the map Not astlarge as Connecticut, our 48th state in sue. A mountainous strip beside the Mediterranean. 135 miles long and 20 to 35 miles wide. Approximately a third of its lVt million people live in its modern capital, Beirut, - whose swanky waterfront note is mane it look sur prisingly like Miami Beach. Because of its location, recorded history got off to a head start here. Although sand and silt long ago made, their waters too shallow to be of much use, Tyre and Sidon were famous ports for the sea going Phoenicians. Glorious Riches And some of our earliest writing was of this country's glorious riches: the cedars of Lebanon, The Phoenicians used them to build their remarkable ships. Sol omon used the cedars for his tenv pie, his fleet and bis chariot. "The righteous shall , flourish like the palm tree," the Psalmist said, "he shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon. Alas, neither the cedars of Leb anon nor the righteous seem to be flourishing today. Successions of invading armies felled entire forests. What the armies didn't destroy, hungry goats did. Only 400 are left of what the Bible calls "the glory of Leb anon. The National Geographic maga zine, in its April issue, has a pic ture of these majestic old cedars, some of which may be more than 1,000 years old. But 1,000 years won't mean too much to Lebanon. Aacleat City North of Beirut is Jubayl. be. lieved to be one of the world's oldest Inhabited cities. Its early name was Byblos, given to it be cause of its thriving trade in Papyrus. The Greek . word for Papyrus is "Biblos," the root for our word "Bible." To the west, in the valley be tween the Lebanon and anti Lebanon mountains, is Baalbeck, an agricultural town of 7,000, but long a crossroads for mankind in his pushing, : trading, and just plain wandering. Here the Phoenicians built a temple of BaaL Here the Greeks had a word for -it, Heliopolis, city or the sun. Hera the Romans put up magnificent temples to Jupiter and Bacchus. Some of the columns still stand, huge things, AO feet high and m feet thick. Here -too are huge limestone monoliths weighing 750 tons. Hqw these could have been boosted into place as much as 20 feet above the ground, remains a mystery. It's here, in Baalbeck, that the fighting was reported Thursday, another unfortunate item in its long and eventful history. Feud During Graduation Injures Four NATCHITOCHES, La. 0(1 A feud erupted into gunfire and knifing during high school gradua tion exercises Wednesday night at Cloutierville, 20 miles south of here. Sheriff Earl Morris said bullets ricocheted through the school au ditorium. Four persons were wounded. A fifth was hit, but not wounded, by a ricocheting bullet. After the victims were taken to hospitals, he said, the graduation exercises were completed. Morris said the Willie Dunn and Freddie Lehesphere families, who reside on the Red River levee, had been quarrling off and on for two'years. The sheriff said he didn't know the exact source of the feud, but he reconstructed last night's events this way: Dunn, 60, and Lehesphere, 29, got into a fight outside the school building during the exercises. Dunn emptied a .38 caliber pistol at Lehesphere, hitting him in the stomach. Dunn ran into the building. Lehesphere pursued him, firing two shots. The bullets missed Dunn, but ricocheted a'nd hit Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Stillman. Still man received a leg wound and hit wile a hand wound. ' Witnesses told officers Hardy Dunn, 15-year-old. son of Dunn, stabbed Lehesphere twice. Statesman, Salem, Ore., Fri., May 23, '58 (Sec.
