North. The Saxons built that up
in the high jump, pole vault, and
broad jump finals Tuesday, but
still managed to extend their lead
by 10 points during the final day.
Marks generally were good, but
three stood out above the rest
Wednesday. The biggest surprise
of the. meet was turned ' in by
Sweet Home's unheralded Nikki
Clark, who came out of nowhere
to win the 880 In 2:01.1. Smith's
Doug Koellman was second by
about 10 yards in 2:04, and Jim
Litchfield of North was third.
Denny Pieters of South broke
his own city shot put record with

The other standout performance
came in the high hurdles, where

lead provided by Cal Bauer's 360
foot homer in the sixth frame
until the eighth inning rolled
around. Then Tri-City evened the
score when Ray Looney parked his
third hit of the evening, a double
off the rightfield boards and Frank
Williams singled him home.
That's the Way things stood un
til Denny Peterson opened the
Salem 11th by beating out a bunt
down the flrstbaso line. But Roy
Parker, the Senators' leading
RBI man,, parked a double to
left-center which chased Peter
son home with the winning run.
Bauer was throws out at. the
plate attempting to score also.
Tri-City made a belated bid in
their half of the 11th on singles by
Len Lindborff and Jack Riley. They
both moved up a base on Jerry
Gregg's fielding error, but Kinds
father stiffened to get the final bat
ter, Roy Staler, on bounce out
Bauer; with three hits including
his first homer of the campaign,
and Parker with two' safeties were
practically the whole Salem bat
ting attack. , Kindsfather fanned
seven and walked but one In reg
istering his third victory.

Competing with the Cards will
be Bob Donovan's Parrish Grays,
Hank Ercolini's Leslie Blues and
Cal Bonney's Leslie Golds. .
The juniors, .having one of
their biggest sesseos, have crack
ed no less than four city junior,
high records this, spring, and all
four' were conquered by Cards
athletes. Jim Martin did a 13.4

the fighting fisherman from Baie
Ste. Anne, New Brunswick pounded
out a 10-round unanimous decision
over Germinal Ballarin of France
Wednesday night. Durelle out
weighed his opponent 178 to 171
pounds.
Durelle was in command almost
from the start of the ' televised
fight as he chalked up hia 73rd
victory in 94 outings. ;
A left hook to Ballarln's body
la the eighth round sent the
Canadian far out In front. And
In the 10th he floored the French
man for the mandatory count of
eight with another left to he Jaw.
The fight was the second that
has been beamed-from outside the
country into the United States. The
first was Joe Brown's one-round
knockout in a non-title lightweight
match at Havana, Feb. 28.
Durelle, Canadian and British
Empire, light heavyweight cham
pion, made the fight all the way
against the . back pedalling
Frenchman.
The flgfit drew approximately
7,000 in the Montreal Forum.
Ballarin had a clear-cut margin
in only one round the fifth when
his left caught Durelle over the
right eye. Durelle was bleeding
for the remainder of the round,
but from there on Ballarin was

tory over San Diego 11-7.
' Gene Lary took the mound for
the Padres starting the 10th and
was shelled for a single by Bob
Will, doubles by Luis Marques and
Bob DiPietro, and a two-run homer
by Nini Tornay. DiPetro's double
was his fifth hit in five official
trips to the plate.
The Beavers tied the game In
the ninth. They filled the bases
on two hits and a walk. Tornay 's
fly produced the run that sent

Dashing Dave Gambee, indexed
by many as the finest all-around
basketball player in the Pacific
Coast Conference the past two
years and certainly one of the all
time greats at Oregon State Col
lege, has signed with the St. Louis
Hawks of the National Profession'
al Basketball League, it was
learned Wednesday.
Gambee, the all-time high scor
er la OSC history, completed his
brilliant collegiate career last
season. Be was Invited to Join
the Phillips M AAU organte
tloa at Bartlesvllle, Okla., and
went there te visit with of
ficlals.
He was also the No. 1 draft
choice of the national champion
Hawks, and finally decided to
turn pro. ,
Terms of the contract have not
been announced, but it is obvious
the Hawks management thinks
highly of the handsome, (-foot,
7-inch star. .,
A check of Gambee's playing
statistics at Oregon State dis
closes that in his three years of
varsity competition, in each suc
cessive seasoa he took fewer
shots, scored more baskets, Im
proved his free throw percent
age, played better defense and
nabbed' more rebounds.
Gambee scored 277 points in his
last season at Oregon State, in
16 conference games, for an aver
age of 17.4 per game.
The former Corvallis High stand
out is married and is the father
of one child, which was born dur
ing the past basketball season. ,
Coach Slats Gill of Oregon
State terms Gambee as being
one of the 'greatest he's coached
la his 30 years at the Corvallis
Institution.
Savage-Sakata-Sasaki Team Wins
Wild BM Savage sot in a few
punches outside the ropes Wednes
day night at the Armory and as a
result his team of Savage, Hani
Sasaki and Mr. Sakata came out
. with a win in a triple tag team
match over Nelson Royal, Black
Hawk and Marco Polo.
) With the main event falls tied at
one each, Savage apparently de
cided he wanted no part of Royal
Inside the ring. He jumped out,
with Royal in hot pursuit. But
Royal immediately ran into a
whistling uppercut and was count
ed out before he could get back
into the ring.
The result brought a chorus of
boos from the fans, who bad come
to see the meanies get their lumps.
Sakata won the first fall over
Black Hawk with a judo Chop to
the throat and a body press. How
ever, Royal evened things up min
utes later when he got Savage in
a reverse surfboard.
Nelson and Savage were also in
volved in a little extra-curricular
activity during the evening, and
Nelson issued a challenge for Sav
age to defend bis Northwest heavy
weight title. .
In t h e evening's preliminary
matches, Red Donovan defeated
Tommy Martindale in the semi
windup. Royal won from- Sakata
when the latter was 'disqualified,
and Marco Pole bested Sasaki with
a reverse leg nelson in the first
match.

1958 Capital Softball league, it was
announced after a meeting In Sa
