8-(Sec. I) Statesman, Salem, Ore., Mon., May 19, '58 Area College Seniors Learn Job Plums Scarce as Employers' Market Returns By DON SCARBOROUGH Staff -Writer The Statesman College seniors .have stopped shooing away visiting employment men with sticks and have started putting out the welcome mat and reading the "help wanted" columns. Things aren't so rosy this year for the collegiate job-seeker who in past years has had plums handed him by fawning employ ment teams sent out by big firms to court the coy June grad. Job offers this spring are only one-fourth to one-half as plentiful as in the mad rush this time last year, a nationwide survey reports. In the Salem area, Willamette University, Linfield and Oregon College of Education agree that the employers' market has re turned. Reerulten More Selective Job recruiters are more selec tive in their interviewing this year, tays Linfield academic dean Dr. Adrian Tieleman. The picking isn't to choice or plentiful and the class of '58 will have to do "a little more self-selling to get the jobs they want. "he said. "Scrounge a bit" was the way one placement official put it. Not nearly as many companies are looking for college seniors this year, Willamette notes. Officials attribute this to a slowdown in business, particularly in timber; and an abundance of job seekers with masters degrees. More and more a BA degree means less and less as a sure key to a job. About 65 per cent of Linfield's 1958 business grads have found jobs, business department chair man Prof. H. C. Elkinton said. "It has been much more difficult to find satisfactory openings this year than last," he said, "and firms seem to hesitate before making final, absolute agree ments." 'Marginal' Students on Spot He supported evidence that, be cause of less competition from pri vate industry, state and federal governments would get more grad uates. Graduates with a "satisfactory personality and good academic background" will find a job in short time, he said. It's the marginal or "just aver age" student who's having most of the trouble landing a good job, the nationwide report of colleges in dicates. Top flight people don't have to worry in most cases. Linfield sociology grads have more offers than they can handle. Dr. E. A. Taylor, department chairman states. But there is also a lot of competition for the jobs, perhaps more than last year, he said. For instance, he said, 80 ap plied for eight jobs offered by the state. Science graduates generally have an easy time finding good worir, but most of them go on to grad uate school Dr. Robert E. Jones, Linfield physics department chair man, said opportunities were about the same as last year or perhaps slightly lower. Both Willamette and Linfield send most of their science students on to graduate training. Teaching Jobs Plentiful Teaching is still a wide open L si':f'-i:;?.' f .. Willamette continues to have three times as many requests for its secondary education teachers as it can fill. The main change in the educa tion picture, according to OCE, is in the strange combinations schools are asking for, such as an Eng lish and girls P.E. teacher. English, math and science, es pecially natural science teachers are in great demand, ULt, saia. Pay Raise Voted Both elementary and secondary job openings are up, but in sec ondary the supply has also grown and because hiring is done later than in elementary, the field is slower moving. Pay is up about $300 a year in Oregon, and from $200-$500 in California where the grass is greener for many Oregon-trained teachers. However, most graduates prefer to stay in the valley and Salem ranks high as a pleasant place to teach and work, one OCE official said.
