Starkweather is on trial for one, the shooting of Robert Jensen, 17, of Bennet, Neb. His attorneys are trying to prove him insane. The statement does not agree In some respects with other state ments attributed to the red-haired I former garbage collector. A letter, introduced earlier at the trial, describes Caril killing the child. Both Charles' and Caril's signature were on the letter. In the statement introduced Wednesday, Starweather recalls that after six killings he and Caril arrived at the fashionable home of Lincoln business executive C. Lauer Ward. Mrs. Ward and a maid let them in, Starkweather said, and told the teen - age intruders "they would be nice and not call the cops." He said Mrs. Ward ran upstairs I and when he went after her, "she missed me about two inches with a .22 caliber gun. I just had a knife ... it ended up in her back." He said he tied her up, threw her on the bed and had Caril do the same with the maid. When Ward came home. Stark - WMthar nlH th nlrW man fought With him over the gun. "He started to run, saia starKweatn- er, "and I shot him in the back once. "He stopped. I told him next lime would be it. He ran to the front door. I shot him. "When I left, there was only one dead person in the house. All three-Mr. and Mrs. Ward and the maid were dead when discovered.
