Church will come true Sunday
when they dedicate their new $546,
000 church at Marion and Winter
Streets.

Clarence and Wilma Perry of
Portland are speaking and singing
in a three-day evangelistic rally at
Salem First Church of God which
opened last night.
Mrs. Perry is professor of noml
letics, the art of preparing ser
mons, at Pacific Bible College in
Portland. Her husband, as minis
ter of music, has traveled exten
sively with his wife in evangelis
tic campaigns throughout the Unit'
ed States.
Meeting will continue Saturday
night, Sunday morning and eve
ning. Saturday at 1 p.m. a class in
personal evangelism will be con
ducted by Mrs. Perry, followed by
a period of visitation for the
church.

were given to the choir in memo

active worker in the church.

Rev. John Cauble. pastor since
1951, will read the order of dedica
tion. Following the formal presen
tation of the keys, Rev. Cauble
will lead a procession of clergy
and choir into the new church. As
sisting at the dedication ceremony
will be Rev. M. A. Getzendaner of
Salem, former pastor of St.
Mark's, and Rev. L. H. Stelnhoff,
president of the Pacific Synod
from Portland.

A public reception in the Church
fellowship hall and an open house
will follow the dedication.)
First services in the modern edi
fice will be conducted at S and 11
a.m. by Rev. steinnoff wno will
speak on "Gates of Beauty" at both
services. St. Mark's high school
choir under the direction of Victor
Pabnason will sing during the
first service and the chancel choir,
directed by Herbert Bower, will
accompany the 11 a.m. service.
A special glow of pride will no
doubt swell the hearts of the older
members of St. Mark's congrega
tion as they think back to 1928
when their parish was started by
the late Rev. P. W. Eriksen. The
congregation had purchased the
old Presbyterian Church at 343
Church St. NE which was sold
when the modern new church was
begun last year.
Since those first days the' con
gregation has grown from a few
until today it numbers 1200, in
cluding 800 confirmed members.
Contemporary Design
Its contemporary design is em
phasized by a facing of Colorado
Pink stone queried at high alti
tudes near Denver. Marble pan
els from Vermont add contrast to
the exterior. And an 80-foot cross
tower lends distinction.

and walnut carry the modern mo
tif to the interior of the church
which has a total seating capacity
of 745. The fellowship hall, down
stairs from the Nave, seats 500.
The main altar is 10 feet long
and made of Eastern Black Wal
nut A seven foot marble frontal
piece for the altar bearing a con
temporary carving of the Last
Supper, is now being completed in
Philadelphia.
Pews are of laminated black
walnut and cherry and the pulpit
is adorned with German Linden
Wood hand carvings of the four
evangelists.
Antique Glass
The clerestory windows in the
10,650 square foot church, are of
deep toned antique glass with in
set louvers to provide subdued and.
indirect coloring for the nave.
A large modern kitchen, youth
room and adult meeting rooms oc
cupy the lower part of the Church
and are adjacent to the fellow
ship haU.

set directly off the Church proper.

by the Oregon Conference, has
been elected by Trinity Methodist
Church as associate pastor. He as
sumed his duties May 1.
A native of North Dakota,
Church came to Oregon in 1932.
He is a graduate of Bismarck High
School and Bismarck Business Col
lege and is currently a student at
Willamette University, majoring in
religion.
He has been associate district
lay leader for Salem Methodist
District for two years and lay
leader for one year.
The Churches have three daugh
ters, Leah, Dianna and Hollie.
They live at 1430 24th St. NE,
Salem.

Navigators
Missionary
To Talk Here
Robert Boardman, representative
of the Navigators, International,
will be guest speaker at Salem
Heights Baptist Church Sunday
night at 7:30 p.m. Mr. Boardman
will speak and show pictures of
Navigator and Christian work in
Okinawa and Japan where he has
served.
Boardman is a native of Salem,
having graduated from Salem High
School in 1914. He also attended
Oregon Statae College. During
World War II he served with the
Marines. While on Okinawa he was
wounded.
After service he was appointed
on the Navigator staff, which has
missionaries on many foreign
fields. Boardman served first on
Okinawa, heading up the Navigator
Bible study program, and then
later conducted the same program
in Japan.
. In the morning service Rev.
Elmer Hiebert, will speak on the
subject, The Sovereign Law of
Love."
At the 6:30 evening service for
youth, Mr. Boardman will speak to
the High School B.Y.
Sermon Title
Announced
In identical morning worship
services at First Congregational
Church Sunday the sermon topic
will be "A Magnificent and Danger
ous Heritage," according to Rev.
David D. Rose, new pastor.
Future sermon topics announced
by Mr. Rose include, "Bequest of
Wings", for Mothers' Day, Day 11,
and "Cause Without a Rebel," for
the June 1 service at which
graduating high school seniors of
the parish will be honored.
The services at First Congrega
tional are at 9:30 and 11 a.m., with
church school during the 9:30 hour.
On Sunday, June 8, and during
the summer months following, there
will be one worship service, at
10 a.m.

Give Program
The World Vision Quartet of Los
Angeles will sing Wednesday at
7:30 p.m. at South Salem Friends
Church, according to Rev. John G.
Fankhauser.
The quartet, formerly known as
the Four Flats of Portland, has re
cently returned from singing tours
of the Southern Pacific and Orient.

an advance workshop for Vacation
Bible School Wednesday, May 7,
at Calvary Baptist Church for the
American Baptist churches
through the Willamette Valley.
This workshop Is for leaders and
workers in the forthcoming Vaca
tion Bible School which will be
held in June. Dr. W. Berkeley Or
mond, pastor of the Salem church,
will also serve as director for the
local Vacation Bible School. The
sessions will begin at 9:30 and will
conclude at 3 p.m. The theme of
the Vacation Bible School will be
Telling the Story of Jesus."
On Wednesday at 8 p.m. the
Boards of Calvary Baptist Church
will meet. Under discussion will be
the possibility of a School of Evan
gelism, a Leadership Training
School for prospective Church
School workers, the formation of a
Church Music Board and the se

May 4-11, with a Family Night at
home. The particular day or even

activities include recreation, read
ing, or discussion, and family
worship. The Intent Is to draw

them to enjoy worthwhile activites
together, Rev. Wayne L. Hill said.

Slated Today
A 'Family Fun Fair" is sche
duled for today at First Methodist
Church as a part of an observance
of Family Life Week, May 4-11.
The week is a national emphasis
on creative family living and Is ob
served annually on the week pre
ceding Mothers Day.
The event today will begin at 3
p.m. in the Carrier Room with ex
hibits and demonstrations of in
terests and bobbles that families
may share together. The displays
are being arranged by a commit
tee headed by Mrs. Francis Drys-
dale and Dr. Frank Voigt.
The session tonight will begin at
7 with folk games under the dir
ection of Mrs. Joe Gray. Fea
tured on the program will be
music by the Prof. Willis Gates
family, a film, and a closing wor
ship service led by the Dr. Ro
bert Anderson family.
The public is invited to attend.
