Both, however, were down from the figures, of year ago. The wholesalers' sales in the first quarter were off 10 per cent from the same three months of "1957. The Federal Reserve Board said department store sales in March recovered substantially, from the low level of February". The board's seasonally adjusted index of store sales in March was 131 per cent of the 1947-49 aver age, on the basis of preliminary Confusing Tax Sentence 'Can't Be Made Simple1 NEW YORK -A panel of col lege professors ruefully reported Thursday that one bit of govern ment which cannot be simplified is a 212-word sentence in the in ternal revenue code. A breakdown showed sales high er in seven of the 12 reserve dis tricts, ' lower in four and un changed in one. During the four weeks which ended April 26, the department store sales were reported 3 per cent lower than in the similar pe riod a year ago. Thus far this year, dollar volume is 2 per cent lower than in the corresponding portion of 1957. For March, a Commerce De partment report estimated whole sale sales at $8,900,000,000, a sea sonal increase of 8 per cent from February but 9 per cent down from last year's March total. Durable goods,, up 10 per cent from February, showed a some what target increase than non durables, which had a 7 per cent gain in the month. Like fishing limits, Arizona also has a bullfrog limit. Morocco King Backs African Unity Proposal CASABLANCA, Morocco (A-King Mohamed V pledged his support Thursday to north African politi cal unity as approved in Tangier by a conference of. Moroccan and Tunisian political leaders and Al gerian nationalists. James A. smyri, ousted 'training officer at' Lack land Air Force Base Tex. The decision overruled two boards of general officers. The boards recommended Smyri be dropped from active duty because of a controversy involving Smyri I skeptic view of roller skating, horseback riding and other non military pursuits by trainees. Douglas directed that Smyri, 39, a veteran of World War II and a native pf Manchester, N.H.? be re assigned immediately outside of the Air Training Command. : Smyri had a hearing at Lack land last September and a review board hearing in Washington early this year. Three generals sat on the first board and five on the second. Douglas gave no reason for go ing against the considered judg ment of eight general officers, but said his decision disapproving: their recommendations completes delegates, with delegates from the ruling Tunisian Neo-Destour par ty and representatives from the Algerian National Liberation Front, called for-the formation of an Algerian rebel government and north African consultative as sembly. the administrative action In ths case.
