Thursday firmly de nied reports it might come up with a better offer to the United Auto Workers before the deadline of con- .. tract expiration May 29. Such reports have been circu latins in the industry for the past iwo aays. Vice President Louis G. Seaton, GM's chief negotiator, told a news conference the company is stand ing firm on its offer to renew wage increases and fringe bene fits provided in the present con tract. "That's where we stand and that's where we are going to stay," Seaton said. "We' do not have any other offer under devel opment" Cites Responsibility Seaton said the company feels tt has a broad responsibility to its shareholders, employes and the nation as a whole to stand firm. He declared many Jettfers have been received from the pub lic urging the company to hold the wage line. But he said this did not mean keeping the status quo. Hs said GM's offer meant workers would Set a minimum of seven million ollars a year more. He estimated union demands would mean a cost Increase of at least 511 million dol lars a year. Seaton had no comment on the report that GM, Ford and Chrys ler were getting together behind the scenes on bargaining policy. Along with these reports came the rumors that a juicier plum would be offered the union by the Big Three. Identical Responses So far the companies have made Identical responses to union de- . mands. UAW Vice President Leonard Woodcock described GM's stand as a tactical maneuver. He said the union had considered and re jected the company's offer which provides an annual wage increase of at least six cents an hour, plus cost of living allowances. At the present time, Woodcock said, the union feels there is no offer on the bargaining table from the company. Seaton said the union had termed the company's estimate of union demands as probably fan tastic. But he said the company can prove that union demands not counting profit sharing would mean an increase of more than 73 cents an hour. Basic wage rates are now $2.40 an hour in the auto industry. ( Dear Ann Landers Old Maid Questions That Virtue Pays Off By ANN LANDERS Dear Ann: This is no cry for help. I'm beyond that. I just want to tell you that your comparison of a girl of easy virtue with a lemon that's been squeezed too many times, (you referred to both as "garbage") was a little ridiculous. Let's face it Men don't like too much morality. It inhibits them, scares them, or just plain bores them. I'm a stenographer, pushing 50. I've had a date or two In my day. The most attractive man I knew was a sea captain. He commanded a huge freighter which plyed between New York and South America. I dreamed of the day when we'd be mar ried and I would be his. Finally, after several months of court ing, he popped the question. But the question he popped had nothing to do with marriage. When the answer was NO he dis appeared for good. I've been passed up time and again for this same reason. I was foolish enough to think a man wanted his wife to be at least 99.44 per cent pure, but I was mistaken. Now what do you say about virtue paying off? And don't S've me any more twaddle about lemons and garbage. OLD AID You'll never convince me the reason you've grown grey at the typewriter is because your moral standards were too high. Good girls get married every day. In fact, a man's imagination can be a woman's greatest asset. A Romeo who evaporated into thin air because he couldn't get what he wanted does not sound like a man who had mar riage on his mind. Far better that this heel disappeared disap pointed. He was going anyway. Dear Ann: As a practicing dentist I took exception to your remark that the only reason a 37-year-old husband would refuse to wear his dentures was because "the store teeth didn't fit" Dentures are like a pianor Regardless of how fine a piano you purchase, you still must learn to play it I enjoy and appreciate your very sound advice. However, in this case, I wonder if perhaps the fault doesn't lie with the man and not the dentures. A dentist can construct the finest den tures in the world but they are useless unless the patient will learn to use them. Sincerely- C.S.: D.D.S. Dear C.S.: D.D.S.: My dental consultant J. L. (also D.DJS.) informs me that there is a great deal to what you say. I will pass on your comment to the wife who wrote and suggest that she urge her husband to practice the piano I mean' to stick with the dentures and master them. Thank yon for writing.
