Although they were developed to be man's best helpers to hunt his game, to guard his flocks, to pull his sleds, to warn him of danger they now loll about, fully protected from everything, includ ing work, from the cradle to the grave. Don't tell your dog this, though. He still thinks he's im portant. Like their masters, dogs now may eat scientifically balanced meals. They take wonder drugs, including tranquilizers. Old Age Study Gerontology, tne scientific study of old age, has hit aogdom, too, for dogs also suffered the diseases of the elderly. They lose their hearing. They get cataracts. They develop cancers. The males have prostate gland troubles. Many find living in this age or at least living with us in this age hard on the nerves. They be come neurotics, possibly through worry over not having enough to do. These views come to us from Dr. J. C. Siegrist, who heads the Veterinary Medicine Department of Schering Corp., an outfit that makes drugs for animals at well as human beings. Siegrist contends that wonder drugs may be even more benefici al to animals than they are to human beings. Hes particularly impressed with the tranquilizer. It now is used on the dog that hankers to taste the postman, the dog that gets car .sick, the dog that worries at the mere sight of a veterinarian. ' Vie Tranquilizer! "Once. we had to use force to examine an animal," Siegrist said. "Now we use tranquilizers. A lot of minor surgery is per formed with tranquilizers instead of anesthetics. Veterinarians say they don't see how they ever practiced without them." Some individuals claim there are times when they simply must have a tranquilizer. Did Siegrist know of a similar ituation involving animals. "Yes," he said, "it is partcu- larly useful with a young heifer having her first calf." Siegrist's interest in aging dogs, by the way, is a personal thing. "I have a 12-year-old boxer," he said. "His name is Fritz. He's in excellent health except that he is deaf. I'm looking into getting . him a hearing aid. Satellite Trip Around Mars Suggested WASHINGTON W-Shooting a m-ton seeing-eye satellite around Mars was suggested Thursday by the chief of the Air Force-Atomic Energy Commission Air Nuclear Propulsion Program, Maj. Gen. D. J. Keirn. Keirn made plain in testimony to the House Space Committee, however, that much development work is still needed before f such a venture- is possible. He said the first reactor in a program aimed at developing an atomic powered space ship will be ground tested in Nevada late this year near the nuclear bomb test site. 1 He tossed in the proposal for a reconnaissance probe of Mars reputed haunt of little green men in many a fiction story as a pos sible first use of ion propulsion in space. The still-to-be developed ion engine would run en a high peed electron stream. Keirn envisaged tossing a 3,000 pound reconnaissance satellite first into orbit around the earth with a more conventional rocket engine. Then the ion engine would take over, bringing the space ship into orbit around Mars in from 30 to 300 days depending on the engine's power. The general called for a com mon sense approach which he said should limit immediate space ex ploration goals to the moon and the two nearest planets, Mars and Venus. The moon, the closest, is about 240,000 miles away. Mars is the most distant at 50 million miles. He pictured nuclear engines as the coming thing in space ships, because of the ratio of power to fuel load.
