Dear Ann Landers
Puritanism Phony?
Sham? Ann Says No
By ANN LANDERS
Dear Ann: Why do all married people ffi "ArneSa pretend to be
100 faithful to their legal mates when in reality, they are cheating
left and right? My European friends are at least honest. They pr.etend
no such thing.
Why doesn't someone tear away the phony sham of purnitanism and
present life in these United States ns it really exists? After all,
humans are only civilzed animals. They are polygamists by nature.
Small wonder the psychiatrists are so busy. Americans are fraught
with guilt. How much healthier if they would present their true face
to the world!
I am a happily married man with four children. I love my wife
but I admit I've had a few affairs d'amour and will doubtless have
more. I maintain it is unnatural and contrary to all laws of human
nature for a man to be true to one woman all of his days. Why expect
the impossible? I'm signing this letter JUST JOHN
Just John? I didn't see any last same or address on YOUR letter.
Why don't YOU tear away the phony sham of parntanism and pre-1
sent your life as it really exists la these United States? How much
healthier If yon presented yonr true face to the world! M
Man is different from the lower animals principally in his ability
to control his behavior through reason. Man is not the helpless
victim of his biological urges.
Fidelity Is one of the major supports of our culture. Not everyone
achieves it In his marriage, but to say It Is "impossible" is
absurd. You cannot speak for all American husbands. You can only
speak for yourself John.
Dear Ann: My ex-boy friend is now dating my best girl friend. I
try to pretend it doesn't matter, but it's really eating me up inside.
She tells me everything he says to her, and I could just die when 1
hear those cute little phrases that he used to say to me. In meantime,
she. asks me for advee on how to keep him interested, and I've been
giving her helpful hints.
I'd love to get my boy friend back, Ann. I didn't realize how much
he meant to me until I lost him. But now that I pretend not to care
for him any more, how can I do it without looking like a big fool?
What do I do next?-STUPID
You caa get out of the advice business. Stop comparing notes and
pretending you feel one way when In reality you feel another. This ,
is how ulcers are born. If you're terribly fond of the boy, con
centrate on how to get him relnterested. You'll never improve your
own situation If you spend all your time and energy teaching the
competition how to run her store.
CONFIDENTIAL: LADY IN THE DUMPS: Put the cork back in
the bottle, Lady. You're trying to drown your sorrows in alcohol and
it won't work. Sorrows know how to swim. Look up Alcoholics
Anonymous in the phone book. They've helped many an emotional
wreck find a new way of life.
TWINKLE-TOES: So he doesn't know you have a husband? 'Well,
how chaming. What YOU probably don't know is that HE has a wife.
Put an end to this relationship. It's N. G.
Are your parents too strict? You can benefit from the experiences
of thousands of teenagers if you read ANN LANDERS' new booklet,
How To Live With Your Parents," enclosing with your .request 20
cents in coin and a large, self-addressed, stamped envelope.
