Salem high schools to join Salem

But on the other hand there may
be t o m e Salem district schools
which they will recommend placing
in other districts.
One result of their studies so far
is a decision that districts as rec
ommended in their proposed plan
may include more than one high
school.
Another recent decision was to
invite St. Paul and Detroit Union
High School districts to appoint
representatives to work with the
committee.
Harry W. Scott now represents
Salem School Board at the com
mittee meetings in a non-voting
capacity and other high school dis
tricts are represented by members
of the committee.

PORTLAND, Feb. 20 UP) - Plans
for the ninth annual business
men's tour of Alaska were an
nounced today by the Portland
Chamber of Commerce.
Cost of the 16-day tour, whieh
begins March 21, will be $475 for
hotel accommodations and fares.
2 Crop Loss Suits FileH
Two damage suits totaling $19,-
200 were filed Thursday in Marion
County Circuit Court. Defendants
are the City of Salem and Lord
Brothers Construction Company for
crop losses allegedly caused from
closed irrigation ditches last sum
mer.
A. B. Minten filed a suit seeking
$3,600 for the loss of six acres of
beans. William H. and Elizabeth
Ann Minton filed suit seeking $15,
600 for loss of bean crops, pasture
grass and hay.
The losses allegedly occurred in
September while ditches were clos
ed during installation of a Salem
water pipeline from North Santiam
River.

HATTCESBURG. Miss . Feb. 20

preschool Negro children from the
burning school yesterday, some of
them several times.
Mrs. Myrtis Burkett, 41, told to
day how some of the children fol
lowed her back into the burning
six room bouse. The children
ranged in age from 10 months to
years.
"I'd get a bunch of them out,
and they'd follow me right back
in the fire." Mrs. Burkett said.
She said she must have taken one
4-year-old boy out six times. I

leading the children to safety.
The fire followed explosion of a
beater in the kindergarten room
of the nursery school located in a
rural area about five miles east
of Hattiesburg.
The house burned to the ground

Burkett said insurance on the
house expired last week. j
Rare Breeds of
Cats to Be Shown
PORTLAND. Feb. 20 UP Two
rare breeds of cats, the red-point
Siamese and the Himalayan, will
be displayed this weekend at a
cat show at the civic auditorium.
Also on display will be leopard
and ocelot kittens.
They are from the Portland Zoo,
which will get part of the receipts
from the show to purchase a pair
of tigers.

my girl is kind of particular,"
he told 75-year-old Ben Kirsch
yesterday at the latter's jewelry
store.
First . Kirsch had shown him a
$400 ring. When he asked for ,
something better, Kirsch produced
a $525 ring and then an $800 one.
When Kirsch brought out some
thing "really expensive," a $2,500
beauty, the man grabbed all four
rings and fled out the door.

CHICAGO. Feb. 20 -Dwight
H. ( Green, 61, who served two
terms as governor of Illinois and
delivered the keynote address at
the 1948 Republican national con
vention, died today.
He entered Chicago's Presby
terian Hospital Nov. 21 for treat
ent of a chest ailment.
Green, a Republican, served as
governor from 1941 to 1949.
He first came to public atten
tion as a member of a federal
team of gang-busters during the
Prohibition era. He was appointed
in 1927, as a special assistant to
the U.S. attorney at Chicago in
income tax cases.
He took part in the prosecution
of a succession of gangsters, and
had a hand In the conviction of
Al Capone for tax evasion.
