Guard Units "
Plan Open
House Sunday
' Salem's three national guard
units will hold open house Sunday
in observance of "Operation Mus
ter" a recruiting drive.
' Company "B," commanded by
Capt. Dewey A. Rand Jr., and
Company "D," commanded by
Capt. Louis L. Osborn Jr., will
put on a public program at the
Salem Armory from 8 a.m. to i
p.m.
AAA Battery "D." commanded
by Capt. William Porter, will hold
open house from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
at 2650 Lee St. SE.
Each will put on a weapons dis
play and explain the local National
Guard program.
Capt. Rand said the Guards are
accepting enlistments of high
school seniors 17-18'4 years old in
the six-months active duty pro
gram.
Men with prior National Guard
or active duty service are also
eligible to join, he said. Those with
at least three years active duty
who reached the rank of corporal

do not have to take the six months
active duty training, he said.
Processors
Urged to Pay
Berry Bonus
Letters went out Thursday from
Herbert E. Steiner, manager of
the Northwest Berry Association,
asking independent fruit proces
sors to pay a bonus of two cents a
pound on the 1957 strawberry crop.
The bonus is to go to growers.
Steiner explained that proces
sors informed "us last year that
the Oregon price was set by Cali
fornia," and as California proces
sors raised their buying price to
10 cents a pound toward the end
of our harvest, later advancing to
12 cents a pound, we (eel you are
morally obligated at this time to
make a two cent per pound pay
ment on last year's (1957) crop."
Steiner concluded his letter with
the suggestion that such a move
on "your part would greatly im
prove your grower-processor rela
tionship and pave the way for
smooth negotiations for this com
ing year s harvest."
The Northwest Berry Associa
tion,, a bargaining agency, was
tentatively formed last September
and permanently organized here
on February 3. Steiner went, to
work as manager September 17,
opening headquarter offices in
Woodburn.
