ATLANTA. Jan. Jo un Georgia
Tech and the University of South
era California today signed a one
year football contract calling for
an opening game in the Los
Angeles Coliseum on Sept. 1. 1161.
Joint announcement of the first
football meeting between the two
schools was made by athletic
Directors Bobby DodeT of Tech and
Jess Hill of Southern California.
This, that, etc.:
Folks expecting to follow the Los Angeles Dodgers in per
son got better break put of Walter O'Malley's Coliseum
deal than they would have
had he housed his club in
the Rose Bowl. The Coli
seum seating is much bet
ter than that a Pasadena,
for the LA arena is built
more like a cup while that in
the Arroyo Seco would be a
saucer in comparison . . .
Even so, the dollar seat

Wins Open
Lewis' bombers have 10 games left to play, true. But only
three of the 10 are here at home. And you already know how
tough it is to win on the road in the cage sport . . . Solos
with Lewis & Clark, Linfield and Pacific are .all that's left
for WU at home. Two at Linfield, two at Pacific and two at
College of Idaho, along with a single at Whitman are yet to
be hurdled on the road ...
Borcher Wouldn't Have WSC Coaching Job
. Speaking of basketball, former U of Oregon coach Bill
Borcher, who's now one of those PCC whistle blowing cul- .
pi-Its, had something of note to say about the Washington
State Job being vacated by Jack Friel. We were with
Borcher over the weekend on a Jaunt to WSC and Idaho,
this one sans police escort for a change ... We asked Bill
If he might not be Interested In the post Friel has held for
30 years. His answer:
"Definitely not. I'd have the same trouble there I had
at Oregon. They wouldn't let me go out and get the animals
(athletes) that you need to win, and Pullman isn't exactly
an inducement for a good basketball player." . . .
We reminded Borcher that Jim Sutherland doesnt seem
to have that trouble In football, but he wouldn't yield, add
ing, "Besides, I've got a better Job now at Roseburg than
I ever, had when coaching even at Marshfleld when I
was the highest paid high school athletic coach in the
state."
For the benefit of the late comers, Borcher is now. with
the US Plywood outfit at Roseburg . . .
Puberty Would Take It If Given Offer
One gent who is interested in the WSC job, but who says
he isn't being given much consideration is Clem Parberry,
the longtime College of Idaho tnentor who for the last few
years has been on the staff at the U of Idaho . . . Clem re
signed all coaching ties with the Vandals last 'spring, but
is still in the physical education department.. He's also taken
up high school basketball officiating in the Moscow-Lewis-ton
area and is building up a summer fishing resort busi
ness near McCall, Ida. ...
The coaching profession does have Its nps and downs.
But there are few "downs" for UCLA's Red Sanders these
days. Or didn't you happen to catch the "Playhouse 10"
television show of last Thursday night, a play In which the
Bruin redhead had a fine part as a football coach? What's
snore, the controversial Sanders did a good Job before the
cameras . . . With added revenue coming In from such as
that, little wonder he told Texas AAM to keep their ol' oil
wells, yachts and f 100 bills . . .
Incidentally, the day may come when the real reasons for
the Texas A&M difficulties will be printed. If it does, the
Lone Star State will be the first USA source to launch a
Sputnik ...
