Jefferson's Firemen Had
Numerous Calls Past Year

JEFFERSON, Jan. 12-The Jefferson Volunteer Fire Departments,
beaded by Fire Chief Gilbert Hoevet, answered 26 rural and 11 city
calls during the year Just past One mutual aid run to the Scio dis
trict was made during bean picking, when a car burned in the Harvey
Mitchell bean yard.
The tinder dry weather during
the latter part of the summer was
responsible for many of the fires.
A rash of them suiting with the
hay bam on the E- w. Nelson
farm in Parrish Gap the night of
July 1, kept firemen busy until the
middle ef September.
The fire hardest to put under
control . during the year was the
1.000-acre brush and stubble fire
n Ankeny Hilt Sept. 13. Assisted
by trucks from the Albany and
Turner department, men fought
the fire for parts of two days and
all night.
Rash ef Fires
Oti Saturday afternoon, Aug. 24,
even' individual fires broke out
aimutanewly after a freight train
passed through Jefferson. They ex
tended from the river bridge here
to Marion. Helping the two Jef
ferson trucks were trucks from
the Slayton, Turner and Marion
departments.
Another all-night fight Occurred
an Parrish Gap ridge read Sept.
10, when a half-mile area of brush
and stubble burned. That same
week, a fire at Jefferson Hardware
on Main street was discovered and
put out before H could spread to
adjoining frame buildings.
Both the Jefferson Rural and
Cily fire departments are on a
volunteer basis, the firemen re
ceiving S3 tor each rural call and
$3 for city calls. Nine men reg
ularly answer calls with Fire Chief
Hoevet. They are Edward Ricks,
Delford Ricks. Gordon Kirsch, C.
D. Person. Howard Broxsoa, Arlie
Cooper. Gilbert Looney, Oliver
Stephenson and Arnold Epps.
BoeVet Again Elected
The department meets on the
first and third Tuesday nights of
the month in their club room in
the City Hall. Last week they or
ganized for the year, re-naming
Hoevet fire chief for the 10th con
secutive year. Gordon Kirsch was
named assistant chief, and Delford
Ricks, secretary-treasurer.
The department ft assisting the
newly-organized Volunteer Fire
men's Association in working on
the feasibility ef retirement plan
and widow and orphans' fund for
volunteer firemen in Oregon.
The City and Rural departments
each have a fire truck. A radio
has been In use on the rural truck
for several months, and one has
been bought and is awaiting in
stallation on the city truck. I

Ailments Strike

S1LVERTON. Jan. 13 - John C.
Larson. 201 Mill Street, is at the
Silverton Hospital in a critical con
dition, members of the family re
ported today. He has been ill for
the past few days and taken to the
hospital Saturday.
Mrs. Lynn Baker, who submitted
to major surgery at the Silverton
Hospital during the week is re
ported improving although she will
be confined to the hospital approxi
mately another week. Baker is dis
posal plant superintendent for the
city of Silverton.
Mrs. L. A. Meyer, who has been
ill for the past few days, was re
united improved Sunday.
WORKSHOP SET
ROBERTS. Jan. 12-The ad
vanced dressmaking workshop of
the Roberts Home Extension Unit
will have H first meeting at the
home of Mrs. E. N. Graves, Mon
day, January 13 at 10 o'clock. The
leaders Mrs. E. N. . Graves and
Mrs. George Roberts will discuss
election of patterns, fabric and
equipment needed for the work
shop, at this meeting. '

SHERIDAN, Jan. lJ-Leland R.
Sackett, Sheridan insurance man,
has been named by the Sheridan
Chamber of Commerce as Sheri
dan's "First Citizen for 1957."
Sackett has an outstanding com
munity service record, which in
cludes most phases of Sheridan's
community life including church,
business, government and fratern
al organizations. Currently be is
one of the leaders in the proposed
MiU Creek-Red Prairie water ir
rigation project.
A resident of the community the
past thirty years, Sackett Is a
past president of Sheridan Rotary
Club and Chamber of Commerce,
of which he is the current treas
urer. His career also includes be
ing city . recorder a number of
years; serving on the City coun
cil and school board and secretary
and treasurer and a member of
the board of directors of Green
Crest Memorial Park since H was J
organized In 1944.
He has served as superintend-!
ent of the Methodist Sunday
School, member of the church!
board most of the years since 1929; I
Methodist district lay leader, Sa
lem district, five years; past pres
ident of Methodist Men's and a
past commander of the Sheridan
Post American Legion. He has al
so been active In fund raising cam
paigns for the American Red Cross
and Boy Scouts.
Sackett and his wife, the for
mer Fannie McKennoa were mar
ried following their graduation
from Willamette University. They
have three children. Mrs. Gilbert
Betty) Heald, Portland; Russell
of Seattle, member of the staff
of Time and Life magazines; and
Stanley, a graduate student and
assistant instructor at the Uni
versity of Oregon.
