Spooks In His Basement
W anyone wonders her 4he--spook .aju3 goblini.gQ..
Halloween, Fred Muller can tell them. At least one of the
invisible fcllowi Is making his home in the basement of
Muller's Zena community residence. Its presence became
known early In November. Until then a largejjlatform scale
in the basement behaved itself in a perfectlyhormal man
ner. Now each mornig around 6 o'clock the pendulum be
gins a slow twinging motion from no apparent cause. Slow
ly it gains momentum, and within an hour is swinging vigor
ously. By 10 o'clock, or shortly before, the action has ceased.
At no other time during the day does this motion occur.
There have been only a few days when the weight holder
behaved itself. Muller can't explain the phenomenon. Neith
er can his neighbors who have witnessed it.
Surely He Must Be Joking
Labish Center Is a community of friendly folk. When .
the oceasloa arises they enjoy a good joke, even If It Is
upon themselves. It was no Joke, however, when some
one broke Into the Willard Aker home last Saturday
night, cleaning out all the meat In the deep freezer. They
used bandy wash basket to carry It off, taking also the .
family's supply of ice cream, turkey, and baked goods,
along with a sack of potatoes and a pair of trousers hang
ing la the utility room. Roy Tyler Is another member of
the community and operates the Labish store. He has a
large Mhlletia board upon which he posts articles clipped
from the Oregon Statesman that are of Interest to his
customers. From Monday's paper he cut the story of the
locker meat theft He posted It, and above It he placed a
big sign "FROZEN MEAT FOR SALE."
Family Name Carried On
Fred Lucht and his wife at Mt. Angel didn't mind waking
up at a midnight phone call this week. It announced arrival
of their sixth grandson. But there was something a little
special about this tiny guy, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Lucht
HI at Myrtle Creek, Oregon. The other five boys were born
to daughters. Little Kirk William Lucht was the first to
carry his grandfolk'i last name. In addition, he has red
hair, a Lucht family trait which has not appeared for three
generations.
Santa Indicates Better Times
A sure sign that better times are coming was noted
at Dallas this week. The Retail Trade Bureau which spon
sors the appearance of Santa Clans, said his gifts of candy
and nuts this year were 50 per cent bigger than In past
seasons. Santa arrived for his first pre-Chrlstmas visit
yesterday, and despite the rain, hundreds of youngsters
were on hand to meet him. While Santa did his visiting
from a shanty. Jn front oL the courthouse, helpers passed
out the treats lo all the boys and girls.
