Prayers were raised in four'
score churches here today invok
ing divine aid in solving this ten
sion-torn city s racial cnsis.
Thousands turned out. The day
was bright and sunny, with the
temperature in the mid-60s.
The 84 participating churches
were of Catholic, Jewish and
Protestant faiths. More than
dozen Negro churches took part
Most of the 64 were in Little
Rock; few were in neighboring
North Little Rock or elsewhere in
the state.

Churchmen of all faiths had

services. They said the purpose
was to seek divine help for the
preservation of law and order,
the casting out of rancor and pre
judice and resistance against un
thinking agitators." -
An unofficial estimate by ' the
sponsors said 6.000 to 7,000 turned
out in response to the sound of
church bells la the clear crisp
air. ,
A spokesman for the Roman
Catholic diocese said 2.033 attend
ed prayer services at 11 churches
of that faith in Pulaski County
which surrounds Little Rock. He
described that as about one-third
of the aggregate membership,

In the downtown business area
some establishments observed
minute of silent prayer at 11 a.m.

ployes time off to go to church
But a reporter who was in one
of Little Rock's bigger depart
ment stores at 11 o'clock saw no
one in the crowd of shoppers and
sales persons who took any out
ward note of the time.
On the streets outside, hundreds
were walking, also without taking
any apparent notice. -
The idea of the prayer services
had been endorsed by President
Eisenhower, Gov. Orval Faubus
and the Little Rock School Board.
Antoine Pinay
Working for
New Cabinet

former Premier Antoine Pinay
inched cautiously ahead today in
an attempt to form the 24th post'
war government of France.
He seemed in no particular
hurry and no one was very opti
mistic about his chances. After
talks with 'caretaker Premier
Maurice Bourges Maunoury, Fi
nance Minister Felix Gaillard, and
Wilfrid Baumgartner, governor of
the Bank of France, Pinay dead
ed to call it a day. He arranged
Sunday appointments with agri
cultural and social security ex
perts and such of the party lead
en as he could find in town.
Pinay, who was called on by
President Rene Coty last night aft
er two leftist candidates Guy
Mollet and Rene Pleven had
failed, presented his program with
a "take it- or leave it" air and
asked for answers in 24 hours.
Leftists seemed particularly
irked by the choice of Pinay to try
to end the 12-day-old crisis. Most
annoying to the left was Pinay's
apparent intention to slash the
government subsidy now paid to
make up the 80 billion francs
1190,476,000 annual deficit in
social security services.
Perhaps significantly, it was a
move to cut social security serv
ices which defeted Pinay and
brought an end to his previous
term as premier in 1952.
Other main aspects of Pinay's
program were . understood to be
these: special powers, perhaps for
two years, to handle the econo
mic crisis; constitutional perform
to give greater government stabil
ity: Vnassive economies with ab
olition of redundant posts in the
army and civil service; no new
expenditures, no new taxes.
Hills Creek
Dam Funds
Said Obtained
EUGENE, Oct. 12 I - Rep
Porter D-Ore) reports the Army
Engineers have obtained a $721,000
supplemental appropriation to con
tinue work at the 33-million-dollar
Hills Creek Dam Project.
Porter said the project nearly
has depleted its four million dol
lar appropriation for the current
fiscal year.
The new funds were taken by
the engineers from other projects
They will be made up next year,
Porter said.
The project is near the junction
of Hills Creek and the Willam
ette River's middle fork near Oak
ridge. The dam, for flood control,
is part of the Willamette Basin
Project. .

paper Le Monde reports it had
no objection to the Soviet Union
and the United States in its turn

stars into the heavens. But, it said
in reference to the cast off but
still flying cone and missile shell,

the race," said Le Monde, "heav
en can wait for us. But can't, we
