The rtnin tunnels connecting buildines
at the Oregon Sts'e Hospital appear to have
been given a clean bill Of health Friday
with the tetimon of Dr. William Thompson
that the term "tunnel therapy should not
be taken to mean illicit relationships between
patients.
A different slant on the term had been
g;ven at the recent congressional investiga
tion in Portland and the board of control
justifiably was interested in establishing the
facts is they exist. We are glad Qr Thomp
son clarified his testimony
The tunnels are a necessary adjunct to
any such institution and dost and continual
supervision of them is essential. From what
Dr Thompson now says, such supervision
seems to be taken care of. A modicum of
freedom Is a necessary therapy in itself in
many cases We hope the unfortunate furore
over tunnel therapy" does not hamper such
treatment

sion This has been a year of strain for the Con

The Supreme Court has been under attack
also because of the series of decisions it ren
dered some months ago which upset numer
ous convictions of alleged Communists or

clear of tha protests that arose from patriots
who felt that the high court was undermin
lng the nation's security through its concern
for Individual rights
What these disputes do is to make the
public aware of the fact that the Constitution
is I document very much alive, and that deci
sions of the Supreme Court interpreting the
Constitution are of Immediate concern lo
millions Of people. The guarantee of secur
ity In person and property of fairness In the
judicial process in freedom of ipeech and
the press have to be narrowed down to meet
specific cases, and then opinions may differ
on the application of the guarantees

storms In the past and will continue to do so
The Supreme Court which is the final author
ity also will be caught from time to time In
