First Lady Changes Costume
By FRANCES LKWINE
WASHINGTON, Jan. 20 UP -Mrs.
Mamie Eisenhower did a
quick costume change today from
church-going attire' to a special
black taffeta dress for the family's
private presidential oath taking
ceremony at the While House.
The first lady had selected a
two-piece black gabardine suit
with pleated skirt, topped by a
silver mink stole for the 9 a m.
appearance with the President at
the National Presbyterian church.
When the presidential party re
turned to the- While House. Mrs.
Eisenhower switched to the V
neckline black taffeta, designed
by Jnnai of New York. She wore
a three-strand pearl choker which
she wore to the 1953 inaugural.
The first lady was thus more
formally clad for the occasion
than Mrs. Pat Nixon, wife of the
vice president, who had no chance I
to switch from the two-piece green
wool suit and white fur beret she
wore to church. Mrs. Nixon also
wore, for the first time, a princess
style coat of black lamb made
from pelts given her by the Queen
of Afghanistan.
A Dress-up Affair
It was a dress-up affair fur all
of the Eisenhower and Nixon rcla
lives who attended the oath
taking.
Even the Eisenhower grandchil
drcn David, in, Barbara Anne
7, Susan Elaine 4, and baby Mary
Jean. 13-mnnths had special
outfits.
Young David had on a grey
flannel suit and a blue and white
print bow tie. Barbara and Susan
had matching dark blue eyelet
dresses, with velvet trim. Marv
Jean was in yellow cotton with a
white organdy collar.
