Blood Test Helps
To Find Insanity

CHICAGO. Jan. 12 -A simple
itx-minute blood test it finding a
peculiar chemical change among
the insane, scientisti reported to
day. .
The discovery was hailed as
"an important breakthrough" to-
irH finHin rancaa anH nira fnr
mental diseases.
It may lead to a practical test
to diagnose mental sickness, tell
how sick person is, and how
much he is recovering.
Most important, it indicates a
mental illness Is caused by a
chemical upset in the brain, said
Dr. Frederick A. Gibbs. Univer
sity of Illinois neurologist, who
called it a breakthrough.
Actual Illaess
"This would mean mental illness
Is not due to 'wrong thinking' but
to actual Illness o( the brain it
self." he said.
The illness could be a slight
chemical change, just as things

at the first annual scientific con
ference of the Brain Research
Foundation.

tute. Stockholm, Sweden, who has
' analyzed 300 sick and normal per
:sons. Dr. Akerfeldt, biochemist,
reported personally at the meet-ling.

The test adds a dyestuff, dim-ethyl-paraphenylene
diamine, to a
small amount of blond serum. Se
rum is the straw colored fluid re
maining after red cells are re
moved. In normal persons, the serum
remains yellow.
But in most mental patients. It
turns red. Red shows up in schizo
phrenia, a maniac depression and
senile psychosis.

field said Saturday he will urge
the arrangements committee for
the next gubernatorial inaugura
tion to seek a larger place than
the State House of Representa
tives. With 6.T0 seats to start with, the
House chamber will be almost
filled Monday with 180 legislators
and their secretaries, two gover
nors' parties, a National Guard
band, the Kugcne Gleeman and a
number of television cameras, he
pointed out.
He said he had no specific sug
gestions but felt that better ar
rangements could be made for the
1959 inaugural if planning starts
early enough.
558 Adults
In Classes
First week registration for Sa
lem's adult education program has;
reached the 558 mark, George D. j
Porter, supervisor of adult educa
tion, said Saturday. Another 209
adults enrolled in collegiate classes
of the General Extension Division, j
Business education classes make
up the heaviest concentration of
adults with over 39 per cent.
Forty students are enrolled in
bookkeeping, and elementary ac
counting classes: 21 in business
letter writing: 21, civil service
preparation; 31, medical office
personnel; 41, shorthand, and 55,
typing.
Enrollments in classes related to
business education include: IS,
English: 20, mathematics, and 15,
public speaking.
Registration will continue this
week in rooms of individual clas
ses, Porter said.

Teen-Ager
Slays His
Sweetheart
PHOENIX. Aril., Jan. 12 -A
17-year-old boy shot and killed
his teen-age girl friend tonight,
police reported. Barry Bruce' was
quoted as saying: 'I shot her be
cause she was going to leave me.
I love her."
Barbara La Pole, 18-year-old
high school senior, was shot as
she stood outside Bruce's car at
a drive-in. Then, detective Fred
Nichols said, Bruce shot himself
in the forehead. Doctors said his
condition was not critical.
Witnesses told detective Bill
Black that they heard at least five
shots.
Just before the shooting, wit
nesses heard Bruce ask the girl:
"Will you come back to me?"
She said no, and, as Bruce later
told the detectives- 'So I shot
her."

man tried to pull her pocket book
from her right arm. but, unsuc
cessful, he dashed away.

Orval F. Horner, Turner Route
1. reported to city police the theft
of his car from the 800 block of
Hood Street Saturday sight. The
auto, which contained an ac
cordion, was identified as a 1950
Chevrolet two-door sedan, dark
green.

Klan to Fight
Integration
With Ballots
TALLADEGA. Ala.. Jan. 12 UV
A Ku KIux Klan leader today said
the organization plans lo wage its
fight against integration with
"ballots and not bullets."
The Rev. Alvm Horn, once In
dicted for murder in a night-rider
killing, said "we ar dissatisfied
with the integration en buses and
plan to pressure our politicians to
restore segregation."
Horn said the klan'i weapon in
the fight for segregation will be
votes and education, not violence.
"We will use ballots and not bul
lets." he said.
"We intend to carry the issue
before our politicians. It is our
plan to campaign for segregation
j just as hard aa the Negroes are
campaigning for integration." he
1 said.
I- Murder charges filed against
Horn following 'the 1950 night
rider killing of Charlie Hurst, a
white rolling store operator, were
dismissed some 24 years later.
He denied any part in the killing.

Ex-Con Sought
In Sherwood
Bank Robbery
PORTLAND. Jan. 12 W Po
live investigating the $19,500 rob
bery of a bank at nearby Sher
wood said tonight they are look
ing for an ex-convict accused of
taking part in the slaying of a
San Francisco policeman Dec. 30.
"They can't hang me any high
er, the lone gunman was quoted
by bank officials as saying in the
course of the robbery of the Sher
wood branch of the U.S. National
Rank of Portland, 15 miles south
of here, Friday.

Cole, 30. the man wanted in San
Francisco, was shown to M. Lynn
Judy, hank manager, who said it
was a "close resemblance" to the
gunman.
The gunman's height and weight
about 6 feet and 185 pounds
also match closely with Cole's,
said Sherilf Richard Busch of
Washington County.
Cole has been sought since Po
lice Sgt. Joseph K. Lacey was
killed while trying, to stop a San
Francisco bar holdup Dec. 30.
Police said Cole was believed
to have headed north and to have
cashed a check for $120 at Burns,
Ore., on Dec. 31.
The hank robber escaped from
Sherwood in a stolen car and
road blocks set up around the lit
tle town of 1.R00 failed to net him.
Ambassador Heini L. Krekeler
advised Deputy Undersecretary of
State Robert Murphy and then an
nounced publicly that his govern
ment "fully and strongly" backs
Kisenhower 's view that nuclear
weapons can be eliminated or
controlled only with adequate
safeguards against violation.
Adenauer had told a news con
ference at Bonn yesterday, in dis
cussing the possibilities of solving
Soviet-Western problems, that
the "main effort" must be made
toward banning thermonuclear
weapons, meaning the hydrogen
bomb.
Various responsible U. S. offi
cials felt that Adenauer's empha
sis on this point and his failure
to say anything about a system
of inspection and control would
be interpreted as a view closer

IA Lady, a Florida black bear,
gave birth to triplets at a wild
animal show today.
Dewey. Touchton, owner of the
show, said that is as rare as
quadruplets among humans.
The cubs, the first litter for
Lady, weighed a pound and a half
apiece and are doing well. The
father. Smokey Joe, weighs 750
pounds.

McDonald came out of her
hideaway today to look at a man
picked up by police in their inves
tigation of her kidnaping report.
The blonde actress said she had
never seen the man before.
Miss McDonald told police two
men kidnaped her from her home
the night of Jan. 3. She was found
on the desert near Indio 24 hours
later.
She le' her home yesterday to
spend the weekend in seclusion on
orders from her doctor who said
she had "suffered a relapse."
Miss McDonald had been de
scribed as "emotionally upset
after being found.
She is staying at her Los An
geles home of unidentified friends.
A police guard has been posted.

County deputy sheriffs said they
received a complaint about 5 p.m.
today from Floyd Plank. Salem Rt
.1, Box 900, that a "wild steer" of
unknown ownership had broken a
fence, trampled a garden and
chased a man up a tree.
Deputies said they were unable
to find the beast because of ap
proaching darkness but would re
sume the search in the morning.

Church Burns
BOSTON, Jan. 12 liftFire today
destroyed the century-old First
Congregational church in a spec
tacular midday blaze in the shad
ow of historic Bunker Hill.
Four firemen were hurt as the
fire raged out of control for more
than two hours. Fire Chief Leo
Driscoll said the loss was about

It was the fifth church fire ia
the Greater Boston area In the j
last month. State police Lt. Syl
vester Meade, attached to the;
state fire marshal's office was un-1
able immediately to determine
cause of the tire. He said his on-the-spot

Hike at Hospitals

Oregon State Employes Assn. to
day urged salary increases for
employes of state hospitals. The
association said 41 8 per cent of
the employes quit each year.
The OSEA urged that psy
chiatric aides be raised tft to
$250 a month and that the starting
salary of other workers be boost
ed to $210 a month.
