MUKDEN. China. ( - Indus-
trial worken in northeast China
line the praises of communism.
They live in state-built housing
projects that would be considered
near-tenements in a Western coun
try.
They breathe the tour smell of
too many people living close to
gether.
But many are living better than
they have ever before, and they
recall with bitterness their status
as peasants in the old Japanese
puppet state of Manchuria.
Hut With Dirt Floor
Chao Kwel-chih, a 28-year-old
housewife, said:
'The house we lived In was
hut with a dirt floor and straw
roof. It wasn't as good as the
water closet we have now. The
grain we managed to raise on
my family's land was not enough
to pay the rent and the taxes, and
half the time we starved."
Her husband works In an elec
trical factory in Mukden Shen

With three small children they
occupy one clean room of a two-
room flat in a workers' commu
nity outside the city. There arc
173 brick apartment units In this
austere subdivision, housing S3,'
000 factory employes - and their
dependents. I picked her apart
ment with no hint from the gov
ernment-mpplied Interpreter. She

Put Money la Bank
"My husband didn't earn enough
to support himself when we were
first married in 1948. Now we eat
well, we buy clothes for the chil
dren and put money in the bank."
The family's room is a plaster
cubicle 14x12 feet, filled by two
wooden beds, a chest of drawers
and a large plant growing from
a wooden box. A plaque of Mao
hangs on the wall beside a photo
graph torn from a magazine. A
second-hand Japanese radio is the
only luxury item.
Her husband was at work.
"He'll be home soon. It takes
just a few minutes ts he has his
own bicycle," she said proudly.
For his six days a week in the
electrical plant. Fa earns the
equivalent of US a month, gets no
vacation aside from the seven na
tional holidays ever the year, and
attends Bight school three times
a week "to improve his technical

Rent for the apartment takes
only the equivalent of $1.25 a
month. The ether room of the two
room unit is rented out to a cou
' pie who share the twin gas burn
ers in the tiny kitchen, and the
water closet. There are no baths
in the 7,000-family community.
Factory hands shower at work,
and the families use a public bath
house nearby.
- On clothes and food. Mrs. Chao

$27 a month. The monthly enter
tainment bill "is too small to
count."
"We have 400 yuan in the
bank." she "added. That is the
equivalent of 110. which will buy
a great many wings in coma,
