Freight Car
SuppIyUpr
Across Nation
WASHINGTON, Dec. tl The
Interstate Commerce Commission
announced, today the railroad
freight car supply situation has
unproved to such ' sn extent that
is revoking all of the emergency
rules issued earlier this year in
an effort to alleviate shortages in
nearly all parts of the country. -
The improved supply. ICC said,
reflects continued railroad-shipper
cooperation in efficient use of
ears. The industry also had
launched a large scale program
on new equipment buying and car
repair. ' - :
Among the rules revoked was
one prohibiting roundabout rout
ing of freight or deliberate delays
in transit. This regulation was an
nounced April t, and was prin
cipally aimed at long-standing
practices of lumber mills in the
Pacific Northwest These prac
tices involved starting cut lumber
eastward or southwarf by slow
routes while negotiating for a sale
or delaying such shipments in
transit in order to make delivery
on a specific desired date.
Some Oregon mills, which
claimed the prohibition would ruin
companies having limited storage
t.iciiitira, gut a fcucrsl court re
straining order sgainst the rule,
hut ICC's power to invoke it was
finally upheld by the court and
the rule became effective June 11.
