grel dog with a plastic patch on
hit' heart was honored today as
"Dog of the Year."
Dr. Paul Dudley White, the
President's heart consultant, fas
tened an elegant new silver collar
on the 44-pound, black and white
mongrel. Airplane, in ceremonies
at Children s Medical Center.
Joanne McLaughlin, 4,'- recov
ering from a week-old heart op
eration made possible by surgical
research on Airplane's heart, aid
ed Dr. White.
Airplane was named by the Na
tional Society Of Medical Research
as "Dog Research Hero of the
Year. The award was established
six years ago in recognition of
services to humanity rendered by
animals in medical progress.
A new surgical technique for re
pairing small holes between the
left and right ventricles Of 'the
heart was developed by experi
ments on Airplane s heart.
Many , children are born with
this heart abnormality but are not
adversely affected usually unlit
they reach age of six or older.
Uncorrected, the defect may re
sult in death.
