after two Jet fichter planes col
lided over the rugged Olympic
Peninsula was spurred today by
the sighting of plane wreckage on
the . slopes of Mt. Olympus. 30
miles southwest of here.

member getting a 1,000 check
from Orviile Hodge, convicted in
Illinois, but he wouidnt be ap
prised if he did. e
"It frequently nappens that Peo
ple send a check to the Republi
can committee and make it out to
me," Hall said at his Oyster Bay,
N. Y home. .
- The Chicago Daily News yester
day listed Hall as among recipi
ents of checks draws against
funds Hodge allegedly stole from
Illinois while he was state audi
tor. Hodge, a Republican, is serv
ing a prison term. .
The newspaper said the check
was dated March 1, 1955, and was
endorsed in Hall's . handwriting
and deposited to the Republican
National Committee account la a

NEW YORK, Oct. 7 -A bunch
of birds were whooping it up last
week in suburban Albany, N.Y.,
stewed to the beak on fallen, fer
mented cherries.
The owner of the backyard
where the boozy birds were wet
ting their whistles said they end

after reckless crash dive maneu
vers. At last report, the robins
were still bobbin'.-
It was, actually, a rather haz
ardous week all around. In Nor
wich, N.Y a landscaper was
speeding right along with his work
when be cut through a branch to
which he had tied his safety belt.
The hospital said be suffered cuts
in the 25-foot fall.
In St. Joseph. Me., a father
fainted In the hospital delivery
room, broke his jaw and nose, and
suffered concussion. He was re
ported in v fair condition. Mother
and baby-their fifth were doing
fine. .
' A Westerly, R.L. woman. In
jured five times in separate auto
accidents, vowed she d not ride in
a car again. She went home from
the hospital after her most recent
injury in a pony cart pulled by a
sneuano pony. ,
Portland. Ore, police were clos
ing to- m -ea automobile thief
when he ducked into brush. Two
of the department's police dogs
were put ea the scent. Each dot
picked up a trail and when they
met they got into a fight. By the
ome tney were separated, the
thief bad escaped. The dogs were
taken to a veterinarian.

cigarettes apparently af
fects your blood, usually ' giv
ing you mora red blood cells and
oxygen-carrying hemoglobin, a
pew medical report says.
Whether this has some effect ea
the' chances of coronary heart at
tacks is now being Investigated.

They checked blood changes in
36 men and 21 women who agreed
to change their smoking habits for
the tests. Smokers quit while non
smokers liad some cigarettes. - .-;

cells than nonsmokers. It dropped
within days or a few weeks after
they quit smoking, rose again

nonsmokers began smoking and se
did red blood cells.
-Dr. Elsen, an alumnus of the
University of Toronto, and Dr.
Hammond said the results suggest
smoking may have some bearing
on coronary heart attacks and up
on Buerger's disease, in which
bleed vessels of the legs or arms
deteriorate. No smoking is one
treatment generally recommend
ed for Buerger s disease.

said they had never smoked volun
teered to smoke king size filter
tip cigarettes in succession. Their
hematocrit went up 4 per cent,
red cell count 13 per cent, and
hemoglobin I per cent.
