    Adlai, in Deep
South, Pleads
For Integration
By EO CREAGH
EN ROUTE WITH STEVENSON
Sept. 25 Adlal Stevenson won
crowd applause in the Deep South
today with plea (or "law abid
ing' acceptance of the Supreme
Court ban on race segregation In
publle ichoolf.
An almoit entirely white crowd
of several thousand at Little
Rock, Ark.. Cave the DemnrriHr I
presidential nominee a burst of
Hndclappine and some cheers
ring out-when he declared that
i cardies or personal feelings all
.'mericans should accept the de
cree "s law abidii citizens."
There was applause loo, though
not 0 much of It nhnl Slvnnn I
followed his appeal with an en
dorsement of the Derr ocratic plat
form rejecting "all proposals for
the use of force" to carry out the
integration ruling.
On Narrew Ledge
Stevenson spoke while standing'
rather precariously on the narrow
ledge of a bunting-draped plat-,
form In Little Bock's MacArthur
rirk. Then he headed south by
ptene for further speeches tod.iv
r-d ton'hl in New Orleans and
Miami Reach.
The friendly reception in Little
Rock to his segregation views de
lighted Stevenson's staff, which 1
had expected ailence at best.
Ai It turned out, not a boo was
heard, although the crowd was
momentarily silenced and aome
members of the audience shook
their heads, when the candidate
reaffirmed his opinion that tha in
tegration decision was "right."
Mreafly U Ceatrary
Applause broke out almost Im
mediately, however, jhen he went
on to say:
"Some of you feel strongly to
the contrary.
"But what is important is that
we agree that once the Supreme
Court has decided this controver
sial question we accept that de
cision as law abiding citizens.
"Our common goal Is the order
ly accomplishment of the result
decreed by the court."
Stevenson said too, the office of
the presidency ahould be used "to
bring together those of opposing
views in this matter to the end
of creating a climate for peaceful
accomplishment of this decision,"
