(adv.) Car Crash Brings Suit An auto collision last May 11 in Salem resulted in a $10,200 dam age suit filed in Marion County Circuit Court Friday Gary W. Lewis brought the complaint against Donald Egbert.. Lewis says, in the complaint, he had stopped for a traffic light at the intersection of North Liberty and Chemekata streets when the Egbert car struck his in the rear. Plaintiff alleges he received neck, head, throat and spine in juries and lost work and incurred medical expenses. He seeks $10,000 general and $200 special damages. Ontario Area Dates Governor Gov. Elmo Smith will spend o day in the Ontario area where he will speak at the dedication of stretch of highway and later at tend a luncheon sponsored by the Ontario Chamber of Commerce. The governor will spend part of Saturday afternoon inspecting the new state armory. He will return to Salem late tonight. Man Unhurt In Collision Of Train, Car A Salem man escaped injury Friday afternoon when his car col lided with a slow-moving freight train at 12th and State streets, city police said. Officers said Paul T. Rowell, 248 W. Superior St., was making a turn across the tracks when his 1953 Ford was struck by the south bound Southern Pacific train about 3;50 p.m. , The car was heavily damaged on the front end, police reported. Gary Street Work to Cost $9,042 Sum Cost of improving a two-block section of Gary Street in the South Keizer area will come to about $9,042, the Marion County Court reported Friday. The announcement concerning a proposal to pave the street lying north of Salem with asphaltie con crete came at a public hearing at which no remonstrance was raised. Bids for the work probably will be called for soon, the court said. Cost per frontage foot to property owners is estimated at $3 15 a foot. Burglary Attempt At Company Fails A burglary attempt apparently was made early Friday morning at the G k B Equipment Co , 2195 Silverton Rd., city police reported. The intruder was believed to have fled before gaining entry. Officers said glass was broken out of a rear window of the firm. A prowl car driver reported bear ing the sound of shattering glass about 4 a.m. while near the spot. Ex-Statesman Writer Likes Life in Capital WASHINGTON - Larry Hobart of Salem is finding Washington "not only beautiful but kind of exciting" as he breaks into a new position on the staff of Sen. Rich ard L. Neuberger (D-Ore.). Formerly a reporter for the Oregon Statesman, Hobart won an Internship position that will permit him to work on Neubergcr's staff for a year. The senator estab lished the plan last year to give a young Oregonian an opportunity to gain experience injvernment and politics. Hobartr-a 1953 University ef Oregon graduate, succeeded Eric J. Voorsangcr, a graduate of Reed College. He was selected by a committee of four prominent Ore gonians. Before working for the States man, Hobart served two years in the Air Force. At the university. he majored in Journalism and his tory and political science. He served as editor of the Emerald, the campus daily newspaper. , Hobart is married, and his wife Judy recently presented him with a daughter, Jennifer. He said he hopes to use the experience he will gain here to return to newspaper work, reporting on politics and government at both the state and local level. "The fundamental thing is that this operation of government is so technical." h- observed, "and all the detailed operations go on be hind the seem." On the senator's staff, he will have a variety of tanks which will acquaint him with the operation of the legislative process as well as insight into the workings of the executive branch of the govern ment. Prevention Of Fire Week Project Due A Fire Prevention Week program will be sparked by Salem Cham ber of Commerce next month, with a luncheon meeting for fire chiefs and volunteers of- many depart ments as a feature. The sproject is under direction of Stuart McElhinny, chairman, and Mrs. Pauline Hillpot Osburn, vice chairman, reports the chiimber. Their committeemen include Sa lem Fire Chief Robert Mills. Fire Marshal Glen Shedeck, John Gercn, Charles Ireland and Al Bauer. The luncheon for visiting fire, men will come Monday, Oct. I, at the Hotel Senator. Souvenir fire helmets will be issued to all at tending. An official proclamation of Fire Prevention Week, Oct. 7-13, has been issued by Mayor Robert F. White, calling on all departments of city government to participate in a special campaign for improv ed fire safety. Stamp Group Slates Show Stamp Collectors of the Salem Stamp Society will conduct their loth annual Willamette Valley Stamp Exhibit from 1-5 p.m. Sun day at the Capitol Room of the Senator Hotel. Several hundred collectors are expected to attend the free pub lic event, according to Ed Payne, secretary of the group. Salem collectors . will display frames of stamps and other phila telic items, and Payne will dis play the bronze medal he won at this summer's Fifth International Philatelic Exhibition at New York City. Joe Weber is exhibit chair man. Tablen will be provided for col lectors who wish to sell or trade material. A 6 p.m. banquet at the hotel will conclude the get-together. Portland, Albany, Corvallis and Eugene stamp clubs have indi cated they will send delegations.
