OPEN FRIDAY KIGHT 'TIL
Fourth Term
FDR Cleared
n
NKW YORK OP-Thc New York
Times Thuridiy quoted Mrs
Franklin D. Roosevelt as saying
doctors told her husband less than
three months before his campaign
or a fourth term that he "could
quite easily go on with the activi.
lies of the presidency.
Mrs. Roosevelt recalled, the
Times said, that the President
under went a series of physical
examinations in May, 1944. She
' said the only advice given by the
doctors, who found him well and
active," was that he should "rest
every day to ease a heart weak
ened by the strain of the war
1 ears in the While House.
The Times said this statement
of Mrs. Roosevelt's took on sig
nificance in view of President
Kisenhower.s statement yesterday
that he planned to have a further
physical examination before elec
tion to determine, his own fitness
for another term.
Health Not fannirirred
Mrs. Roosevelt also was" quoted
at -saying consideration of health
had no part in the decision to
drop Henry A. Wallace as Roose
velt s running mate in 1944.
The Times said this statement
was an "interesting sidelight
Mew of the current debate in Re-
publican circles over whether
Richard M. Nixon should be the
President s running mate.
The question of I'reident Roose
velt's physical fitness to run again
was reaffirmed by Vice Admiral
Ttoss T. Mclnlire, White House
physician, in his book "While
House Physician." 4
Kxcellenl Cdili.
in: the: book Mclnttre - recalled
that on the basis of check-ups in
143, 1944 and 1945 he had san
that the President was in "excel
lent condition .for a man of his
age.
"I stand by the judgment to
day .without amendment or apol
ogy," the doctor wrote. "Although
be was tired and worn, since he
could not be induced to spare him
self, every check justified the ex
pectation that be could and would
continue to carry the load, bar
ring the unforeseen.
President Roosevelt died ofa
cerebral hemorrhage April 12,
1945 at the age of 63, about three
months after his inauguration as
President for fourth term.
