CAR REPORTED MISSING
William Loomis, Salem Route 4,
Box 28, reported early Monday
morning to police that his car was
missing from a parking place in
the 400 block State Street.

Two Marion County persons re
cently stricken with polio were
reported in "good" condition Mon
day at Salem Memorial Hospital.
Mrs Frances Johnson, Salem
Route 5, Box 415,. entered the
hospital Saturday for treatment of

was hospitalized.
Attendants said Monday that
neither patient is at present suffer
ing any actual paralysis. Mrs.
Johnson's case was the fifth re

Army Reserve
Recruits Begin
Six months of training began
Monday for eight youths, all mem
bers of Salem's three Army Re
serve units.
Opening their training at Ft.
Ord, Calif., were Pvts. George Ja
cobson, Allan W. Meissner and Ro
bert E. Cotner, all members of
the 29th Field Artillery Battalion,

Reporting at Ft. Bliss, Tex., to
begin their training u n d e r the
Army's eight-year Teserve program

The Ft. Ord contingent left Satur-
! day night on the SP's Cascade.
The trio training at Ft. Bliss were

A Portland man was sentenced

WaIter Alvln Re1d,a 40-year-old
laborer, received he sentence
from" Circuit Judge George Dun
can. He had been held in the
county jail- since his arrest on the
charge June 25.

Edward O. Stadter Jr. imposed
$-175 in fines in. three cases Mon
day involving drunk driving.

to the charge after being arrested
by state police while driving along

a $175 fine. He was arrested by
sheriff's deputies Saturday while

The third man was Willie Whit
man Maynard, 54,' Norfolk, " Va.,
who was arrested last Friday on
Highway 21 about 3 miles north
of St. Paul. After pleading guilty,
Maynard was finea $100.

sentative of Gov. Elmo Smith.
Charles A. Sprague gave a brief
talk of welcome, outining Oregon's
attractions.
The group went to Eugene last
night after a tour of state build
ings. Included were Roy Dunlap, St.
Paul Pioneer - Dispatch; Jerry
Lloyd, Los Angeles Examiner;
Herb Beck, Chicago Herald
American, and Polly Noyes, 'San
Francisco Chronicle. They are to
spend two week tf' on the Oregon
tour, which is one of several ar
ranged by the Pacific Northwest
Travel Association.

Ervin Wayne Speer, 27, Aums
ville, was. bound over to the
Marion County grand Jury Monday
after he waived preliminary hear
ing on a charge of bur.lary not
in a dwelling. ,
Both Speer and Raymond Clar
ence Bashor, 43, Portland, were
arrested Saturday by state police
on a charge of breaking into a
North River road service station.
Speer was apprehended in the
service station, while Bosher was
arrested as he drove up to the
station.
Bosher, at his District Court ap
pearance Monday, requested a
preliminary hearing, which is still
to be set by District Judge Ed-
waru v. siaaier jr. nan was con
tinued at $2,000 each.
Fatal 'Mishap...'

A $20,000 suit, , based on an ac
cident last fall in which two teen
age girls died and three other
youths were injured, was filed la

ton, parents of Gay Lesley, who
was killed Nov. 20, 1955, on High

part of the Freres Lumber Com
pany, Larry Freres 'and William

The company la named as owner
of the death car, Freres as agent
of the company, and Weddle as

pany owner, and Weddle were in
jured in the accident,
A judgment of $20,000 is asked
by the girl's parents who are act
ing as administrators of her es
tate. Pre-Sentence Probe
Set for Check Writer
A pre-sentence investigation was
ordered for a Salem woman Mon
day after she pleaded guilty in
Marion County Circuit Court to a
charge of obtaining money by false
pretenses. .
Iris Jane Riley, 22, 3409 Williams
Ave., acknowledged passing a
worthless ,$20 check in Salem sev
eral months ago. She was arrested
on the charge July 23. ' . '
