Ohio lv- A soecially Liberty Street -Curt Street trained team of Air Force scien- tuts, technicians and pilots at Wright Air Development Center (WADO soon' will probe, the mys teries of the Jet stream a "river Air Scientists . 5rh ) r 76) Js . ot air. ' Purpose of the study ia to ob tain scientific facts about the jet stream, the wind speeds on it, and how it changes altitude, course and direction. The jet stream is a high speed current of wind that moves snake like through , the upper air. at al titudes ranging from 23,000 to 40, 000 feet. Since the stream frequently oc curs over the Southern United States, tests have been run by air- cramased in - Florida. For the new study, however, the base of operation has been moved here because the stream frequently oc curs over the northern part of the country and southern Canada in the summer months. Jet Bombers The research team, flying from Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. will use-a specially equipped B47 , jei nomoer to probe the secrets oi me stream. A . recently developed automatic navigator will be used to chart the speed of the winds, sometimes estimated at up to 250 miles per hour, in and about the jet stream. The. Investigation is expected to ieaa to more -accurate forecast ing of the jet stream's winds so -Ahfcr-mfYOThVer'cTarietTh- ers can take advantage of them By "flying the Jet stream" jet aircraft can Actually extend the distance they can fly without re--fueltne.-This-may -result in -less fuel consumption and faster trips. r fuehn.- Thij-may-r fuel consumption and A six million dollai A six million dollar, seven-storv hospital opened recently at Wright . Patterson Air Force Base will be under close scrutiny by all branches of the armed services. Test Model The massive concrete structure Is a test model of permanent type hospitals tor the Air Force. Of ficials say it ii the first of its kind in the United States. - Already several minor flaws have been detected by personnel at the 3 14-bed Hospital. for instance, the audiometer room was carefully sound-proofed so that hearing tests could le con ducted with accuracy. But the room was not equipped with elec tric outlets. The neuro-psychiatrie ward has the latest treatment facilities, but the fence that incloses a rooftop - recreation space is only seven feet high and can be climbed easily. Aside from mistakes like these, -the hospital should be the envy of other military establishments. "We have always offered the best of medical care," says Col. Edgar 0. Olscn, commanding of firer. "Now we combine that with . the best of hospital facilities." Such facilities Inclti. deep X ray therapy using gamma rays for cancer treatment, a room in treatment, and a pneumatic tube system to whisk messages from floor to floor, riped Muile There are individual "stetho scope" radios over which will be , received programs and recorded music piped from the hospital's radio room. Portable pay tele phones can be wheeled to bed sides. There's a two-way audio visual call system from patients to nursing stations. Seclusion rooms on the neuro psychiatic ward have ceiling mi irophones that pick up conversa tions a patient holds with him- self. Psychiatrists believe what he says may help them unravel his complex. The hospital may expand to 500 hods by adding two floors to an east wing and constructing a four story wing at the rear.
