County to Be
Test Site in
Farm Tax Plan
Plan to tsa Marion County aa
"test county" la developing a
mora eql table method of determin
ing farm valuation for tax pur
poses was announced this week by
the State Tax Commission and
Stat Board of Higher Education.
The project Involves a $10,000
contract signed with Oregon State
College la which OSC farm soil
expert will work with the tax
commission reclassifying all Mar
lon County farm. Cost will be
shared equally by the tws organ
izations. ,
, If the rw-evaluatloa project is
succesful. It will probably be ex
tended to other counties later,
Samuel Stewart, tax commission
chairman, said.
Plan are to develop soil maps
and classification units through a
study of soil, climatic conditions
snd types of crops grown In Mar
lon County. This will be combined
with estimated figures on the net
annual Income per acre en individ
ual farms, to help determine tax
assessment rate.
In the past tax commissioners
based their farm valuation find
ing ra such thing as distance of
farms from markets and soil
types, with little emphasis on farm
productivity.
Stewart said Marios County was
' chosen for the experiment for two
principal reasons, the diversity of
, crops raised oa its farms, and the
' property re-appraisal program
that la already under way in the
county.
