PARRiS ISLAND, SC. (A A
senior drill sergeant testified Fri
day that he intended to march
Marine Platoon 71 into the deadly
marshes of Ribbon Creek. He
said S. Sgt. Matthew C. McKeon
beat him to it.
The march last April I cost the
lives ot six young Mamie recruits
who drowned. McKeon is being
tried by court-martial (or their
death.
S. Sgt. Edward A. Huff, 38, of
' Chicago, with chiseled features
and shaven head, was McKeon '
non-commissioned superior officer.
He said it was the practice at
this sprawling S.OOO-acre training
base to discipline balky recruits
by marching them into swamps
at niftt.
Huff called the 74 members of
Platoon 71 "just mediocre" as re
cruits. He was so dissatisfied with
them, he added, that he threat
ened them before April I, "Ml
take you down to the swamps."
"Did you Intend to take them
in?" tha prosecution asked.
"Yes sir." Huff replied, his
deep, military voice sounding
slightly hollow over loudspeakers
that flanked the witness chair in
the base auditorium.
Didn't Have Time
"Why didn"t you take , them
in?" Jie was asked.
"Because I had a training
schedule to meet and I sdidn't
have the time," Huff said.
In further testimony, the
tanned, compactly built sergeant
said he never advanced the idea
of the night march to Sgt. Mc
Keon. Huff said he, himself, never
actually had conducted such a
disciplinary march and never saw
any other drill instructor conduct
one.
VI have heard . drill instructors
say they have but I have not ac
tually seen it," he added.

Boy Emperor

China Trials
By LEONARD LEFKOW
HONG KONG I - The first
news in six years of Henry Pu-Yl.
the onetime "boy emperor" of
all China, came from Peiping Fri
day with the ' announcement he
had testified at a trial of high
OlllVlglS UI 1IIC iviinri wn)iBinc
puppet state of Manchtikuo.
Peiping radio said 28 .Japanese
were sentenced to prison for
terms ranging Irom 1 to 20 years
for alleged crimes during the 14
years of Japan's rule of Man
chukuo, the name they gave to
China's northeastern province of
Manchuria.
Pu-Vi was the puppet emperor
Kang Teh during Japan's rule.
Both Red China and Nationalist
China convicted him of treason in
absentia for alleged traffickings
with Japan. Peiping radio said to
day he was still "in custody" but
gave no details.
Now 5 Years Old
Lanky, bespectacled Pu-Yl, now
50, began his career as a pawn
of fate in 1908, at the age of 2,
when he ascended China's dragon
throne and became Kmperor Hu
nan Tung. But the Chinese revo
lution of 1911 toppled the 268-year-old
Manchu dynasty and Husan
Tung abdicated in 1912. He con
tinued to live in the walled pal
ace, and even was restored to
power for a week by one of
China's warlords.
Disguised as a coolie he es
caped to a sanctuary in the Japa
nese concession of Tientsin in
1924. There he lived quietly as
"Mr. Pu-Yi" until 1931 when the
Japanese grabbed Manchuria and
proclaimed him first as regent
and then as emperor.
His "palace" was part of a
barbed wire compound which the
Japanese used as the headquart
ers of their salt monopoly.
Captive f Russia
He was captured by the Rus
sians in 1945. Moscow promised
to surrender him to China, but
did not keep the promise until
long after the Communists had
driven tha Nationalists from the
mainland.
In 1946 Pu-Yl was taken to
Tokyo under Russian guard and
testified at war crimes trials
against prominent Japanese. The
last news of him was in 1950,
when a returned Japanese pris
oner of war reported he was liv
ing an easy life in a targe house
in Khabarovsk, Siberia, where he
spent his time whittling and play
ing Mah-Jong. '
The news Friday meant that he
may have been brought back to
spend the rest of his days as a
prisoner in the land where as a
sickly child he was the ruler in
name.
